Mirror bacteria are a fascinating yet deeply concerning concept emerging from synthetic biology. These organisms are designed to be built entirely from reversed biological molecules, opposite to the natural building blocks of life. While this might sound like the premise of a science fiction movie, the science behind it is real and advancing, with vast potential applications for mirror biomolecules. Despite their promising applications, these bacteria could negatively impact the ecosystem. One area of concern is bacteriophages, viruses that target bacteria. Bacteriophages are crucial for controlling bacterial populations in nature and are even used in therapies to treat bacterial infections. Mirror bacteria would likely be immune to these natural viruses, rendering one of our most effective tools against superbugs ineffective. Scientists could attempt to create mirror versions of bacteriophages, but this would be a significant challenge with no guarantee of success. In this project, the student will combine bioinformatic, synthetic biology and modelling approaches to study putative phages and tailocins, and their interactions with sequenced clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. The student will become a joint member of two flourishing UoM research communities: the Manchester Microbial Evolution Research (MERMan) group, and the Manchester Institute for Biotechnology (MIB) https://lnkd.in/e4f-uE-H
