Asia for Animals Coalition

It is with great sadness that we announce the sad passing of Dr John Wedderburn in Indonesia on November 25, 2024 at the age of 83. John was a giant of a man in the field of animal welfare. A champion for all species during his years in Hong Kong and beyond in Indonesia, many of us will remember John for establishing the Asia Animals Protection Network (AAPN) a coalition that brought groups together from across the world focusing on and helping animal issues Asia wide. This network and the friendship it grew between local groups across Asia was probably the first inspiration for the Asia for Animals conferences and coalition. John was kind, brave, humble and relentless - a staunch vegan who spoke out loudly against animal injustice and inspired so many to join the movement of eradicating cruelty and making animals matter. He served as an intermittently director and vice-chairman of the RSPCA for two years. He established an animal rights branch of the RSPCA, called the "Animals Rights subcommittee", which includes opposing fur, supporting vegetarianism, opposing animal testing, and more. It became the earliest prototype of animal rights in Hong Kong. Dr. John Wedderburn later assisted in the establishment of many charitable groups that support animal welfare, including EarthCare, Hong Kong Vegan Society, the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Testing of Animals (Laboratory) Animal Defenders), Lamma Island Conservation Group (LAWC), STOP!, and the Animal Friendly Policy Concern Group (AFA). John also served as Board member and friend of Animals Asia for over 13 years. He will be sadly missed.
