Market Brief • 2024 will likely be the most profitable year for container shipping companies outside the 2021-22 COVID windfalls. Red Sea diversions supported earnings and absorbed most of the new capacity delivered in 2024. • Freight rates continue strong at the end of the year giving carriers a firm position for their annual contract rate negotiations. • A record 471 ships for 2.94m TEU were delivered in 2024. Only 67 ships for 93,475 TEU were deleted. Net capacity grew by 10.1%. Growth is projected to grow only 5.5% and 3.7% in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Port Congestion • Global congestion increased over the holidays to 2.68m TEU or 8.6% of the fleet, due to high traffic, poor weather, labor issues, and capacity constraints. • Capacity waiting at anchorages spiked to a 2-year high of 10.8% on December 26 before easing to 8.6% at the end of the week. • European congestion was centered at Antwerp, Hamburg, Rotterdam, London, Valencia and Genoa. • North American congestion was seen at Oakland, Vancouver, Prince Rupert, Halifax, New York, Norfolk, Savannah, and Charleston. • There remains no progress on the ILA-USMX labor negotiations, and carriers have issued advisories and contingency plans with expectations for a January 15 strike. #Logistics #Seafreight #Airfreight #Inland #ProjectCargoHandling #OOG #Sourcing

Freight Rates • SCFI rose +2.9% last week, driven by rates to USWC (+9.1%), USEC (+7.7%), and Australia-Melbourne (+8.1%). Rates slipped to Southeast Asia-Singapore (-5.5%) and South Africa-Durban (-1.3%). • USWC rates are +9.1% from last week, +37.0% from 30 days ago, and +79.4% from a year ago. • USEC rates are +7.7% from last week, +22.6% from 30 days ago, and +70.7% from a year ago. o USEC premium over USWC was stable at 33% or $1,493 (from 34% or $1,444) last week). • Asia-Europe rates remain strong helping carriers boost 2025’s annual contract rates. • Transpacific rates received a year-end boost. #Vietnam’s #Logistics Performance in #Q3.2024. Vietnam’s #logistics sector has become one of the country’s key economic drivers, recording an impressive annual growth rate of 14-16%. Vietnam's logistics market significantly contributed to the country’s #export and #import turnover over the years. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam currently ranks 43rd globally in the Logistics Performance Index (LPI), positioning itself among the top five ASEAN nations in logistics, alongside Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. A recent analysis by Agriseco Securities Corporation forecasts that the logistics sector will achieve a profit increase of 1,620% in #Q3/2024, alongside sectors like fertilizers, retail, livestock, and banking.  In #Q3/2024, the sector reported a significant 22% year-on-year increase in profits, reaching 8,100 billion VND. For the first nine months of 2024, the total profit of Vietnam’s logistics industry is estimated at 24,400 billion VND, marking an 18% increase from the same period in 2023. Seaport operations have also experienced a notable 20% increase in cargo volume compared to the previous year. This positive growth is driven by #Vietnam's robust import-export activities, which saw a 17% rise, reaching 511 billion USD in the first eight months of 2024.
