"Investing in and supporting Vietnam's young workforce is the key to unlocking a brighter and more sustainable future, bringing significant benefits to both Vietnam and businesses," stated Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Duc Tam at the "Global Cooperation in Developing Human Resources for the Semiconductor Industry" forum, held as part of SEMIExpo. According to the Deputy Minister, in recent years, Vietnam has proactively implemented numerous specific solutions to attract investment, promote the comprehensive development of the innovation ecosystem, create an environment to foster research, development, and the application of science and technology; encourage and prioritize selective investment, focusing on high-tech projects in the semiconductor sector. Although the global semiconductor industry is rapidly developing, many countries, including Vietnam, are facing a severe shortage of human resources in the semiconductor industry. Many experts believe that strengthening cooperation between educational institutions, governments, and businesses is crucial. Speaking at the forum, Do Thi Thu Huong, Director of Vietnam Government Relations at Intel Corporation, pointed out that Vietnam needs to develop and adjust its curriculum in conjunction with advice from industry businesses. In addition, the government can also provide financial support, resources, and policies to develop this curriculum. Moreover, businesses can implement internship and scholarship programs. At the same time, businesses can collaborate with universities to implement R&D cooperation programs to promote innovation. Sharing the same viewpoint, Professor Nguyen Thanh Tung, Vice Rector of CMC University, emphasized the importance of cooperation between universities and companies. In addition, training programs also need to be updated annually, including new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. DEVELOPING INTEGRATED CIRCUIT DESIGN, PACKAGING & TESTING IN VIET NAM Within the framework of SEMIExpo Vietnam, NIC, in collaboration with SEMI, Da Nang People's Committee, and Da Nang Semiconductor and Artificial Intelligence Design and Research Center (DSAC), successfully organized the forum "Developing Integrated Circuit Design, Packaging, and Testing in Southeast Asia" on November 8th. Speaking at the forum's opening, Mr. Vu Quoc Huy, Director of NIC, stated that the semiconductor industry is becoming one of the main driving forces for Vietnam's economic and technological development. Vietnam is focusing on developing the semiconductor industry ecosystem and human resources, concentrating on integrated circuit design, packaging, and testing. Also at the forum, Mr. Ho Ky Minh, Permanent Vice Chairman of Da Nang People's Committee, presented the city's efforts in building a semiconductor center in Da Nang from a local perspective. According to the Permanent Vice Chairman of Da Nang People's Committee, the city has been implementing three groups of solutions and tasks to create a favorable environment for the development of the semiconductor industry ecosystem, including: Building the political and legal foundations to create policies attracting investment, incentives, and cooperation in the field of semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Quang, Director of FPT Semiconductor, shared: "Currently, Viettel and FPT are the two Vietnamese companies operating in the IC design field. Viettel focuses on 5G, while we focus on PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit). Our great ambition is to become the number one IC design company in Southeast Asia. Not only stopping at PMIC, but we will also develop AI chips in the future. FPT Group aims to train 10,000 personnel for the Vietnamese and global semiconductor industry. "VIETNAM IS POISED TO BECOME SOUTHEAST ASIA'S SEMICONDUCTOR HUB At the "Elevating Vietnam in the Global Semiconductor Supply Chain" forum, held as part of the 2024 Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition - SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024, experts have assessed that Vietnam is well-positioned to become a significant player in the semiconductor industry and has clearly demonstrated its aspiration to be a vital link in the global semiconductor supply chain. "Vietnam is rapidly emerging as a semiconductor powerhouse in the region," said KC Ang, President of Global Foundries Asia and Chairman of SEMI Southeast Asia. Speaking at the forum, Le Quang Dam, General Director of Marvell Vietnam, shared that the semiconductor industry in Vietnam has been developing for a considerable period. In the past year alone, Vietnam has achieved three major milestones. Firstly, the Vietnamese government has developed a clear strategic plan for the development of the semiconductor industry in Vietnam in the short, medium, and long term. Secondly, there have been positive signs in the development of human resources. Thirdly, the number of semiconductor startups has increased significantly. Analyzing Vietnam's advantages at the forum, Le Dang Dung, Senior Advisor of Sovico Group and former Chairman and CEO of Viettel Group, stated that geopolitically, Vietnam is located at the center of the semiconductor network, which accounts for 70% of the global semiconductor production. "Another important point is that the government's strategy for developing the semiconductor industry is now very clear and determined. SEMICONDUCTOR GIANTS GATHER AT SEMIExpo VIET NAM 2024 The Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 will take place at the National Innovation Centre (NIC) in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park from November 7-8. The first expo on the semiconductor industry, which will gather more than 3,000 member companies, and 1.5 million professionals in the semiconductor and electronics design, manufacturing, and supply chains worldwide, aims to strengthen international cooperation. It will also look to mobilise resources and connect investment opportunities between domestic and foreign businesses. At a press meeting on October 23, NIC's director general, Vu Quoc Huy, said that the semiconductor industry is the core of the electronics industry, responsible for creating microchips and electronic components to manufacture complex products. To diversify the supply chain after the COVID-19 pandemic and complicated geopolitical movements, as well as to take advantage of abundant affordable human resources, companies are moving to Asia. According to the Global Semiconductor Alliance, Vietnam's semiconductor market is expected to reach $7 billion by 2028, with a compound annual growth rate of about 6.7 per cent from 2023-2028.
