According to the U.S. International Trade Commission, in the first 9 months of 2024, the United States imported 73,000 tons of pepper, with 57,000 tons coming from Vietnam. This is ten times higher than the amount imported from India, which was only 5.7 thousand tons during the same period. Compared to the same period last year, Vietnam's pepper imports into the U.S. have increased by 43%, while the value surged by 60%, reaching $281 million. With this import volume, Vietnam continues to be the main supplier of pepper to the U.S. market, accounting for 78% of the volume in the first 9 months of 2024. The U.S. has been increasing its pepper imports, with the quantity rising by 43% and the value increasing by 56% compared to the same period last year. According to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs, Vietnam's pepper exports in the first 10 months of 2024 totaled 219,000 tons, valued at $ 1.11 billion. This represents a 3% decrease in volume but a 47% increase in value compared to the same period in 2023. The U.S. remains the largest market for Vietnamese pepper, accounting for 29% of the volume in the first 10 months.

The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association is a pivotal organization that plays a vital role in facilitating the exchange of goods and services, connecting markets, establishing production partnerships between farmers, cooperatives, and corporations, and safeguarding the interests of companies concerning legislation, regulations, and development, both in domestic and international markets. 🌍 Last week, the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) attended the 52nd Annual Sessions and meetings of the IPC and the International Spice Exhibition hosted by the International Pepper Community (IPC), held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Vietnamese delegation, including Mr. To Viet Chau - Deputy Director General of International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and VPSA, was accompanied by Vietnamese export companies. During the event,🎖️ HANFIMEX GROUP was honored with the Best Export of Value-Added Pepper, and 🏅 Mr. Tran Loc from Ba Ria Vung Tau province received the Best Pepper Farmer. At the conference, Madam Hoang Thi Lien, Chairperson of VPSA, delivered a presentation on the Vietnam Pepper Crop Report, covering the following key topics: 💡 Vision: To make Vietnam a one-stop source for high-quality spices that are sustainably produced, traceable, and compliant with the regulations of importing countries. ⛔ Challenges impacting farmers and, consequently, production: Climate change, weather conditions, pest diseases, the shift of farmers to high-value crops, and high labor costs. ✅ Opportunities: Improved farmer awareness, higher prices, better farmer motivation, controlled expansion of pepper land, and reduced pesticide residues due to farmers being trained in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). 👉 The Way Forward of Viet Nam pepper industry: 1️⃣ Increase area under sustainable cultivation 2️⃣ Crop diversification & multi-cropping 3️⃣ Decrease pesticide residues in spices 4️⃣ Extensive soil testing to improve plant health 5️⃣ Increase carbon sequestration 6️⃣ Decrease greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) 7️⃣ Extensive farmer training 8️⃣ Value addition in spices 9️⃣ Market development Madam Hoang Thi Lien also provided detailed updates on Vietnam’s import and export statistics, with a highlight being that Vietnam's pepper exports surpassed $1.1 billion in the first 10 months of 2024. 👏 A big thank you to the IPC team for organizing such a successful event, fostering connections among industry stakeholders, and creating a platform to share valuable insights that will drive the sustainable development of the pepper industry. #VietnamPepper #SustainableAgriculture #VietnamSpice #pepper #spice
