On May 31, 2024, the expert meeting on pilot offshore wind power projects in Vietnam, organized by the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), the Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam, and the Danish Energy Agency, was successfully held in Hanoi. The meeting was attended by experts from the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Science Research & Engineering Institute, Vietnam-Russia Joint Venture “Vietsovpetro”, Vietnam Environmental and Marine Sciences Institute, Embassy of Denmark, Danish Energy Agency (DEA), Energinet, Aarhus University, Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), Vietnam Petroleum Institute... The meeting focused on discussing Petrovietnam’s strategy on offshore wind power development, the status of Vietsovpetro’s offshore windfarm pilot in Block 09-1, the status of EVN's offshore windfarm pilot and grid connection process in Vietnam, the status of ports construction and service for offshore wind project in Vietnam, and the status of environmental permitting for offshore windfarm in Vietnam. Additionally, the meeting listened to lessons learned in developing offshore wind power projects in Denmark, such as grid connection experiences from Denmark’s offshore projects, ports for construction and service, environmental experiences from Denmark’s offshore projects and the support scheme and price expectations for offshore wind power projects. Danish and Vietnamese experts also focused on discussing key issues in the development process of pilot offshore wind projects, from licensing, seabed surveys, environmental impact assessments, to technical aspects. Additionally, the price expectation was discussed to ensure the project's competitiveness and sustainability. The meeting also paid special attention to training and developing high-quality human resources to meet the future needs of the offshore wind industry. Dr. Nguyen Minh Quy - VPI’s Deputy General Director shared that with the accumulated data, knowledge, and in-depth understanding of the marine environment from the oil and gas exploration and production, VPI has proactively conducted research and collaborated with international partners to assess the geological, environmental, and oceanographic conditions of the seabed. VPI has been researching and applying advanced artificial intelligence technology to analyze high-resolution seismic data and integrate geological and geotechnical data into an integrated foundation model as the basis for foundation design, optimal turbine location selection, as well as submarine cable routing. Concluding the meeting, VPI, Embassy of Denmark and DEA expressed sincere gratitude to the Danish and Vietnamese experts in attendance for sharing their current status and valuable lessons learned in offshore wind energy, and believed the successful meeting would strengthen cooperation between Vietnam and Denmark, ultimately driving the development of greener energy solutions to meet Vietnam's needs.
