AMD's high-end and first 800-series AM5 motherboards, the X870E & X870 series, will launch in late September, close to the Ryzen 9000X3D introduction.

AMD's X870E & X870 AM5 Motherboards Target Later September Launch, Close To Ryzen 9000X3D Unveil

At Computex 2024, AMD announced its next-gen X870E & X870 chipsets which saw a range of new and upgraded designs from motherboard makers. These new AM5 motherboards will feature not just an updated design but also carry support for new I/O features with USB4 being the main high-light.

Besides the USB4 support, the AMD AM5 X870E & X870 motherboards will also feature PCIe Gen5 support as a standard across both graphics and M.2 NVMe slots while supporting higher EXPO OC speeds, allowing users to take advantage of higher-clock speed DDR5 memory kits. While several motherboard makers have already showcased their latest designs at Computex, we have managed to learn that these products will be available a few months after the launch of the Ryzen 9000 CPU family which is scheduled for a 31st July retail release.

ASRock's New X870 Chipset Motherboards

Certain aspects that have been upgraded on the AMD X870E & X870 motherboards include:

  • USB 4.0 standard on all X870/X870E motherboards
  • PCIe Gen5 on Graphics & NVME on all X870/X870E motherboards
  • Higher EXPO memory clock support on X870/X870E motherboards

According to our sources, the AMD X870E & X870 motherboards will hit retail on the 30th of September which is two months after the launch of the Ryzen 9000 CPUs. It is stated that the launch will be fairly close to the release of the next-gen Ryzen 9000X3D chips which are also expected to launch this year though we don't know the exact launch date for those chips yet.

In addition to the X870E and X870 motherboards, the company also plans to introduce its B850 & B840 chipsets which will serve the mainstream segment. Following is what the chipset lineup will look like:

  • X870E (Promontory 21 x2)
  • X870 (Promontory 21 x1)
  • B650 (Promonotory 21 x1)
  • B840 (Promontory 19 x1)

Now the reason why the launch date is so far away versus the Ryzen 9000 Desktop CPUs is simply because there is still a lot of 600-series inventory to clear out, mainly the B650 SKUs. Motherboard vendors are aiming to offer their existing AM5 products (X670/B650/A620) with some sweet price cuts down the road which should prompt more users to switch to the AM5 family once the Ryzen 9000 CPUs hit the market.

The AMD 600-series is still more than well capable of supporting the Ryzen 9000 CPUs and there are some really fantastic options from motherboard makers.

Besides those, the existing Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs are also expected to get additional discounts in the coming weeks which should make AM5 a great value. Even with the current prices, the AM5 platform as a whole is quite a deal with DDR5 prices at their lowest and several Ryzen 7000 CPUs such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D close to $300 US. The flagships have also seen prices drop below $500 US over the last couple of weeks.

Following are all of the X870E & X870 motherboards we covered during Computex 2024:

The AMD X870E and X870 motherboards will be marketed at a slight premium due to their high-end nature but they will also push memory further than what the highest-end X670E boards were capable of. We will talk about Ryzen 9000's and X870(E)'s memory overclocking capabilities soon but for now, what we can say is that AMD has a rich motherboard offering with its 600-series, and for users who want to push things further with the latest Zen 5 chips, 800-series will be here in a couple of months after these chips hit shelves.
