OpenAI launched ChatGPT's desktop app for macOS this Tuesday and said it would be available for both the free version and premium subscribers. The app was first rolled out in May but was limited to ChatGPT Plus users. However, the recent shared update said it will now be available to all users, with the company now opting for a wider roll-out. It would feature a Voice Mode, memory capability, and more.

At the WWDC 2024, ChatGPT coming to macOS was announced, and the partnership between OpenAI and Apple to bring the chatbot to iOS 18 was also shared. Mac users can now access the feature by downloading the ChatGPT app and tapping Option+Space simultaneously.
OpenAI's official account posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the ChatGPT app being available for Mac. The app is said to provide all the web version features, with better performance and extra on-device capabilities.

OpenAI believes that ChatGPT's desktop app for macOS would help users quickly access the chat interface for queries that require prompt response. The app would also come with a built-in Voice capability that will allow users to engage in a verbal conversation with the AI and eliminate the need to write long prompts by simply activating the voice mode.
The dedicated app will also come with a unique set of advanced options like the ability to take screenshots of a portion of the screen or the entire screen. Users can then upload the screenshot to the app and ask queries accordingly. The ability to take a screenshot is located in the paperclip icon on the top left portion of the interface.
Users can upload pictures to ask for more details about it by utilizing AI, which is a very convenient method. A search feature, available on the side panel, will also help you dig into previous conversations to find the relevant information you are looking for seamlessly. Additionally, a memory feature is also available, which will remember information shared across sessions for more tailored search results based on your usage pattern and aforementioned preferences. OpenAI is opting for a wider consumer base and does not require any subscription to use ChatGPT on Mac. The most recent version of ChatGPT is currently available for free but can handle only limited requests. The company intends to add GPT-4o to the app soon.
