Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 flagships to feature silicon batteries and LPDDR5T RAM

Qualcomm’s shift towards custom Oryon cores would be one reason why a company executive hinted that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would be more expensive than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. However, there are other reasons why future flagships would pick up in price, and according to one tipster, it would be due to adopting various other technologies, such as upgraded batteries and faster memory support. Here is a closer look at the details.

Tipster claims that most Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 flagships will not even feature improved technologies and will just offer a chipset upgrade

On Weibo, Digital Chat Station hints that just the ‘cream of the crop’ premium smartphones sporting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will arrive with better technologies such as silicon batteries and LPDDR5T RAM support. As for the standard smartphones, the tipster states that we should see regular additions such as ultrasonic fingerprint sensors and LPDDR5X memory. Chipsets like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 have been tested with LPDDR5T RAM, with MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300+ actually having support for this standard without any additional tweaking.

SK hynix also unveiled its own version of LPDDR5T RAM with operating speeds of 9,600Mbps. So, while the technology exists, the reason why we will see it in Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 flagships and not the current-generation ones is because the adoption rate will likely be higher, possibly making this memory standard slightly cheaper to use. As for silicon batteries, we have slowly started seeing these in high-end smartphones, with the technology allowing manufacturers to increase the capacity without bumping up the cell’s thickness.

Naturally, adopting both silicon batteries and LPDDR5T RAM in the most premium Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 flagships will mean that these devices will be highly expensive. Digital Chat Station mentioned in an earlier post that the upcoming SoC would be pricey and that Qualcomm’s phone partners would have to think long and hard about their products’ overall configurations if they want to sell them at a competitive price. So far, we do not have details on the exact models, but we should draw out comparisons in the coming months, so stay tuned.
