The asseveration (or certification) of a translation is often required for documents such as diplomas, birth certificates, legal documents, medical reports, contracts, tenders, etc. In general, a sworn translation is required whenever an official certification is needed testifying that the translated text perfectly corresponds to the original text, or when the documentation must be presented abroad. In this case we speak of legalised translation.
The translator brings the original text, translated text and a valid identification document to the court or justice of the peace. While making the oath, the translator attaches a certification of sworn translation to the documents which will bear, in addition to the translator’s information, the register number that corresponds to that in the Office Register of sworn translation certifications.
When a translated document must be presented abroad, it must often be legalised. This is done by taking the translation to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the same court where it was previously sworn. Thus, the legalisation of a translation first calls for the translation to be sworn, after which the sworn translation can be legalised.
