The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is a highly prestigious and competitive mathematical competition that attracts the best young mathematicians worldwide. It was established in 1959 and held for the first time in Romania. Since then, it has been held annually ever since, providing students with a platform to showcase their mathematical skills and knowledge. The competition has grown significantly over the years. It now attracts students from over 100 countries worldwide, including countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania. This year, the IMO 2024 is set to take place in July, providing a platform for talented young mathematicians to showcase their skills and compete against their peers.

IMO Syllabus (Classwise) 2024

The IMO syllabus is designed to test students’ mathematical knowledge from Class I to XII, covering topics from Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Number Theory, and Combinatorics. The syllabus is divided into different levels, depending on the student’s class. The difficulty level increases as the students progress through their classes.

IMO Exam Pattern 2024

International Maths Olympiad invites students from classes I to XII to participate and excel at the international level, which will be conducted in two levels. The important points of the competition’s both levels are given below.

Level 1:  The first level of examination is conducted during school hours in the respective schools of the participants.

  • The Level 1 competition is an objective-type test of 60 minutes, consisting of 35 object-type (MCQs) for classes I to IV and 50 objective-type questions for classes V to XII.
  • The question paper consists of four sections:

o   Section-1: Logical Reasoning

o   Section-2: Mathematical Reasoning

o   Section-3: Everyday Mathematics

o   Section-4: Achievers Section

  • IMO is held on three different dates. Schools can choose any one date at their convenience. Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) prepares separate question papers for each examination date.
  • The test is in the English medium of the International Maths Olympiad.
  • SOF follows CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabus while designing IMO exam papers.

All students from classes I to XII are eligible for the IMO exam.

Level 2: Level 2 of the SOF IMO exam is conducted for classes III to XII students. The second-round qualifiers will include

  • The International Level: Top 5% of candidates, class-wise, who appear in the SOF IMO Level 1 exam at the International level.
  • Zone/State Level: Top 25 from each zone and category rank holders.
  • At School Level: Class Topper where at least 10 students from a class appeared in the examination and secured at least 50% qualifying marks

IMO Eligibility 2024:

The IMO is open to all students in Class I to XII below the age of 20 on July 31st of the current year. Students from any country can participate in the IMO, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

The eligibility criteria for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2024 are as follows:

  • Age: The student must be born on or after July 1st, 2004, and must not be older than 19 years of age on July 31st.
  • Education: The student must be enrolled in a secondary school or college and not have completed his/her schooling before the year of the IMO competition.
  • Nationality: The student must be a citizen or permanent resident of the country he/she represents and have the nationality of that country.
  • Selection: The student must be selected by the National Mathematical Olympiad (NMO) organisation of his/her country based on his/her performance in the national-level mathematics competition.
  • Participation: Each country is allowed to send a team of six students to participate in the IMO competition. However, a country may be permitted to send fewer than six students in exceptional cases.

The event is hosted by the Mathematical Olympiad Foundation of Japan and co-hosted by the United Kingdom.
