Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dildo?
Chances are, you already know what a dildo is. But, in case you need a refresher, a dildo is essentially a non-vibrating, phallic-shaped sex toy. "They can be used for sexual penetration purposes but also masturbation," says Phillips. "They can be inserted into the vulva, anus, or the mouth." Historically, dildos were designed to resemble a hyper-realistic penis, but with time, non-realistic dildos have increased in popularity. In addition to aesthetic range, dildos can be constructed from several different materials, like silicone, rubber, plastic, stainless steel, or break-resistant glass, Phillips explains.
How do dildos differ from vibrators?
The main difference between vibrators and dildos is that vibrators, well, vibrate, and dildos usually don't. You can still find vibrating dildos on the market, but overall, dildos are more centered around the pleasure of penetration itself. In contrast, vibrators provide stimulation with machine-controlled sensations—especially for people with clitorises. "Vibrators can be dual-acting; therefore, they provide internal and clitoral stimulation," says Phillips. Dildos also tend to have a phallic shape, while vibrators have a greater range in shape.
What are some of the benefits of using a dildo?
Dildos can be used for vaginal stimulation—and often, anal—known as pegging. "Pegging is when a person wears a strap-on dildo, particularly a vulva-haver, and penetrates a penis-haver's anus," says Lee. "But this is not about gender; two vulva-havers can get it on with pegging. If you are a cisgender man with the fantasy of having your partner penetrate you and hit your prostate, pegging is also for you." New York City-based dominatrix Domina Katarina previously explained that using dildos in the anus can open up doors for people with prostates. "A lot of prostate owners don't get to stimulate their prostate, and that's a whole other orgasm available to you," says Katarina.
If you're testing the waters of vaginal dildo penetration, Phillips suggests grabbing a short-length toy, "which nudges the G-spot well," he says. As for anal sex, whether you're playing with the idea of pegging a partner or just enjoying the feel of solo P-spot stimulation, dildos are a great place to start. Phillips recommends using a smaller-sized dildo or butt plug with lots of lube for a smooth glide. "Dildos with curved bulbous tips are great for prostate stimulation," he adds.
What are the best type of dildos to use during anal sex?
Not every dildo can be used anally, so make sure to read the instructions. If it says "vaginal penetration only," put the dildo down. It also helps to buy an anal dildo with a flared base so the toy doesn't get stuck (hey, it happens). For prostate stimulation, Phillips says a pick with a curved shaft and bulbous head will hit the right spot. As for pegging, sex therapist Liz Powell previously advised, "The really good dildos are the ones that are narrow in diameter and fairly long." But, no matter which anal toy you use, always remember: Lube is your best friend.
