SOCK IT TO ME

Selena Gomez's Latest Updo Isn't a Sock Bun Per Se…

But it sure reminds me of one in the best way.

Remember the sock bun? Back in the early 2010s, we were all sculpting the perfect round, high bun with a little help from a humble sock—at least until the hair companies got wise and started making those big mesh donut bun shapers instead. It was a pretty genius styling hack once you got over the idea of wearing a sock in your hair, and while I doubt Selena Gomez has a pair of Hanes crew socks in her latest updo, it certainly reminds me of the old-school sock bun and all the hours I spent sweating in front of the mirror trying to make my hair look as perfect as Lauren Conrad's.

Gomez wore said bun on the set of Only Murders in the Building, pairing it with a hot pink textured dress. Her dark hair was pulled up and cinched at the crown of her head in a perfectly circular high bun—so circular that it looks like it could be the work of a cleverly arranged sock to give it that pristine shape and plumpness. Is her character Mabel Mora a DIY hairstyle whiz? Gomez left her long curtain bangs out of the updo, leaving them loose on either side of her face. Judging from other photos from the set, it looks like Mabel and her podcast pals are attending a wedding, hence the gown and the upstyle.

The sock bun's glory days may be behind us, but if anyone can convince me to go searching for my dusty old mesh donut from 2013, it's Gomez. This is such a perfect, goes-with-everything bun: the size! The shape! The casual-but-also-formal versatility! You can wear it to a wedding, the office, a Sunday brunch, a Bridgerton rewatch … literally anything and everything. Just skip the statement necklace this time around.
