- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 September 2022I've followed Ann Russell on TikTok for a long time now and was delighted to hear that she was condensing the advice she's given over hundreds of videos into a book.
I think this book is spot on - it doesn't preach, or try to convince you to do anything you're not sold on or comfortable with. Advice is delivered as suggestions and tips rather than hard instructions. And I feel Ann writes inclusively, acknowledging the physical and mental health struggles that can get in the way of achieving our home ideals. Each room section contains both quick fix target spots, and deeper-clean considerations, and at absolutely no point is the reader made to feel like there's a standard they have to hit to be 'adequate' or 'normal'. As a result, there's no room for defeatism - the reader is encouraged to do what they can, with tips on how to maximise results, but to also not hold themselves to someone else's standards.
I was pleasantly surprised by the breadth of this book. The title is ambitious, and the contents cover everything from the expected (useful cleaning supplies including what to avoid, how to tackle common rooms) through to the not-what-I'd-have-thought-to-find-here-but-brilliantly-useful (what to do if you discover a sudden leak or fire in your home, how to fix things, what to do you when you move in to a rental property). In the current climate, the sections about keeping warm in the house, and drying clothes etc are particularly relevant. There's even a section on how to enter the cleaning trade if that interests you.
I'd solidly recommend 'How to clean everything' to anyone who'd like guidance about how to clean and run a house, particularly those about to move into new accommodation for the first time (including students). It's perfect to dip into, and has a handy index at the back. Ann writes very clearly, and with a lovely gentle humour. This isn't like a 10-step-plan book where you come away feeling able to master a skill for all of ten minutes before reality sets in (and you never read the book again); this is a very readable and friendly aid to help you clean and manage a home effectively, and might help you make a number of little changes that will add up to a long-lasting difference.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2022I've had this book for maybe a fortnight, and it's already helped me to get on top of several household tasks I haven't been able to navigate in years. Adding soda crystals to the wash (I live in an area with the hardest water I've ever experienced) has been life-changing.
That sounds daft I know, but everyone in my house has sensitive skin, and being able to get our clothes clean with less detergent and fewer rinse cycles is going to save me hundreds of pounds (and hours of my time) yearly. It's a huge relief, especially to someone who spends time washing wee out of bedding and garments. Plus I was frantic at the thought of this winter's electricity bills, and now I'm not.
If there's one flaw with this book: as someone with chronic pain and mobility issues, some of the practical and no-nonsense tips just aren't applicable for me. However, this isn't billed as a disabled person's guide to cleaning, and it gets 5 stars from me because much of the advice is still easily adaptable.
What I enjoyed most however, was the book's readability. Yes, it was full of useful cleaning instructions, largely adaptable to my needs--but it also made me laugh. I thoroughly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2022I'll be honest, I bought this book because I've watched Ann's videos on TikTok for ages and think she's a lovely person deserving of support, rather than because I particularly wanted it for myself.
I knew it would be well-written but I have been very pleasantly surprised by how much really good info it contains and how much of it is helpful to me. I'm not new to housework and I'd say I run a decently clean and tidy home when I can be bothered, as well as agreeing with Ann on a lot of things (like not wasting your vinegar and bicarb by mixing them together!), but the book has lots in there that I'd not considered or heard of and now I have some new ideas to try!
What I really like is how nicely written it is. Reading about housework isn't usually high on my list of things I want to do, but I enjoyed it! If you're familiar with Ann already, you'll be able to hear her voice as you read. If not, you might want to look her up as I think it comes across how lovely she is.
I think she's hit the nail on the head with the tone of the book - emphasising that being clean isn't the same as being good, and that we should all do what works for us and whatever we can manage. I wouldn't usually expect a book about cleaning to make me feel good, but this does, so thank you Ann.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2023I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this book and how much it's stayed with me. It's an unassuming little book really, but like Ann's Tiktok channel it's packed full of quick, frank and practical advice, much of which was completely new to me - e.g. I've been using a washing machine for 20 years but had never understood the differences between the cycles! I'm now going to pay a lot more attention to what my clothes are made of and how to take care of them.
The book is mostly about cleaning, but it veers into all sorts of advice about keeping on top of a household. In a world where many of us don't consider this our top priority, but are still surprised by how much our home demands of us, Ann's guidance here is really valuable. It's like a very informed Auntie teaching you how to make your life easier.
I'm now going to buy 10 to throw around at Christmas, I imagine it'll feel like a warm hug in January!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 February 2024I liked how she explained things and also gave advice to people who had mobility problems. I found out things I was unsure about. Her advice about using what you can afford was a great change as sometimes the advice is about things you can't afford.
It was nice to hear that if your house is not a show house it's fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book tells you how to clean things you didn't even know you should clean!
This book is akin to a cleaning encyclopedia! Is there anything Ann can't get clean? I doubt it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have resource for every household!
Hardback book. Well organized. Brilliantly organized start to finish. As a resident of the USA I patiently waited for this title to become available this January 2023. Ms. Russell doesn’t push any brands or methods but rather a non-biased approach to keeping a clean and tidy home, regardless of any skill set. A simple guide on how basic resources which are accessible to all can be used to tidy-up and make your home inviting!
Great price. Well written. I look forward to a kindle/e-version announcement as well. A great gift for a housewarming invitation, too!
