Product Description

Product Description

The French press coffee maker is accepted worldwide as one of the best methods for brewing coffee and our New Kenya coffee press is sure to deliver not only gourmet coffee flavor, but modern design. The durable and heat-resistant glass beaker is partially encased by the black plastic frame of the New Kenya coffee maker. The frame covers a part of the sides and bottom of the beaker, making it safe for the tabletop without using a trivet or coaster. Simple to use, the French press is a proven method for brewing flavorful and balance coffee. Coffee is measured in 4 oz. cups, so our 3-cup press will brew 12 oz.; a single serving. The small size makes it great for the home or office, anytime you want just one cup of coffee. For best results, use coarse ground coffee. Just add the appropriate amount of ground coffee to the beaker (we recommend one 7 gram scoop per 4 oz. of water). Fill the beaker with hot water (just off of a boil). Leave about an inch from the top of the beaker. Give the coffee a stir with a plastic or wooden utensil to mix it completely with the water. Set the plunger and lid unit in place with the safety lid in the closed position. Allow the coffee to brew for 4-minutes and then press. Turn the safety lid to the open position, serve and enjoy. Clean up is easy too – just scoop out the grounds with a rubber spatula, and rinse the beaker and filter. There is no paper or additional filter required. The 3-part stainless steel filter system is built right into the press. The stay cool handle is built right into the sturdy New Kenya frame. All parts are dishwasher safe. The New Kenya is also available in 4, 6, and 8 cup sizes.

Freshly designed with swooping curves, the black plastic frame on the New Kenya coffee press adds to the anticipation of the morning coffee. And good coffee indeed this press makes. Most aficionados agree that the French press, or plunger, style of coffee maker produces the smoothest cup of joe. Bodum makes the carafe itself of borosilicate glass, the lightweight, heat-resistant kind found in science labs, and the plunger and three-piece filter system of stainless steel. The plastic frame tightly wraps the glass beaker and protects your table from its heat. The lid is also plastic.

To make coffee in the New Kenya, put in the glass carafe one scoop of coarse-ground coffee beans per every four ounces of brewed coffee you intend to make. Add nearly-boiling water, stir with a silicone spatula, and place the filter-plunger-lid unit in the top. After four minutes of brewing, slowly press down on the plunger. Pour, and enjoy. Use the same spatula to scrape the grounds out afterward, and rinse out the carafe and assembly. All the parts are dishwasher-safe as well. The smallest of the New Kenya presses, this size makes 12 ounces of coffee, which equals approximately one travel-size mug or two small after-dinner cups. --Ann Bieri

Awards and Accolades

In 2004 the Bodum Chambord coffee press received the American Culinary Institute's award for best French press coffeemaker.

The American Culinary Institute judges food preparation products such as mixers, waffle makers, and electric teakettles. These products are judged on criteria important to consumers such as ease-of-use, safety, and the quality of the food produced. The institute also judges food preparation products used in restaurants and hotels, including institutional mixers, large-volume coffee machines, and food slicers.

Instructions for Use

1. Place pot on a dry, flat, nonslip surface. Hold handle firmly, then pull the plunger straight up and out of the pot.

2. For each 1.25-deciliter/4-ounce cup, put 1 rounded tablespoon or 1 Bodum scoop of coarse-ground coffee into the pot.

Caution: Use only coarse-ground coffee. Fine grind can clog the filter and create high pressure. Place coffee maker on a heatproof, nonslip surface.

3. Pour hot (not boiling) water into the pot. Leave a minimum of 2.5 centimeters/1 inch of space at the top. Stir the brew with a plastic spoon.

Caution: Metal spoons can scratch or chip the glass beaker and cause breakage.

4. Place the plunger unit on top of the pot. Turn lid to close off the pour spout opening. (Does not apply to the Brazil models.) Do not press down. Let the coffee brew for at least 4 minutes.

5. Hold the pot handle firmly, with the spout turned away from you, then using just the weight of your hand, apply slight pressure on top of the knob to lower the plunger straight down into the pot. Lowering the plunger slowly with minimal pressure produces best results. If the filter clogs or it becomes difficult to push down the plunger you should remove the plunger from the pot, stir the brew, and then slowly plunge again.

WARNING: Using excessive force can cause scalding liquid to shoot out of the pot.

6. Turn the lid to open the pour spout and then pour coffee.

7. Unscrew the filter assembly and clean the plunger unit after each use. All parts are dishwasher-safe.

      Company History

In 1944 Peter Bodum, the father of today's owner, Joergen Bodum, started Bodum in Copenhagen. Times were difficult at the end of World War II; there was hardly any trade and people were out of work. Peter Bodum managed to wholesale a very small variety of housewares products by Danish manufacturers.

After the war Peter Bodum got an import license for kitchen and tabletop products; he traveled all over Europe and ended up importing kitchen and housewares to Denmark. As in the rest of Europe in those days, a lack of products in Denmark meant a market existed for almost anything to be sold. He specialized in glassware from Eastern Europe.

In the '50s Peter Bodum started developing his own products. He collaborated with the Danish architect Kaas Klaeson for a range of coffeemakers. At the time, industrial-design-type kitchen products were very rare. The first Bodum product to hit the market in 1958 was the Santos coffeemaker--based on a vacuum coffee brewing system. It became an instant sensation not only in Denmark but in all of Europe. Bodum still produces the original Santos design to this very day.

Bodum grew steadily during the '60s, but sadly, in 1967, at the age of only 57, Peter Bodum passed away. His wife managed the company until 1974, when she offered her 26-year-old son Joergen to join her in the management of the company. Joergen quickly brought on board Carsten Joergensen--then a teacher at the Danish School of Art in Copenhagen--and soon put him in charge of overall design for Bodum, including everything from products to corporate design, exhibitions, shops, buildings, catalogs, and advertising. It turned out to be a very long and fruitful collaboration. The two men began to fulfill Bodum's credo--"good design doesn't have to be expensive"--in lots of different ways.

In 1974 the first fruit of Joergen and Carsten's collaboration was introduced: the French coffee press Bistro. It was also the first incorporation of the new Bodum design language--beautiful simplicity and excellent materials for everyday life. Many more variations of coffee presses followed. Since 1974 Bodum has produced over 50 million French presses, taken the leap from "coffee" to "kitchen," and developed and produced a large variety of beautiful household and tabletop designs.

In 1979, when he took over the company, Joergen Bodum decided to move to Switzerland in order to be more centrally located in Europe. He chose the Lucerne area, where Bodum's head office has been located since the early '80s.

In 1980 Bodum Switzerland and its design unit, Pi-Design, were founded. Then, in 1986, the opening of Bodum's first shop in London marked another milestone in the Bodum history. It was designed not only to be the perfect showcase for the large variety of Bodum products but to embody an even stronger presentation of Bodum as an international brand. Many more shops in many more cities all over the world followed: Paris, Copenhagen, Zurich, Lucerne, Tokyo, New York, Dallas, Okinawa, Auckland, and many more. To this day there are 52 Bodum stores worldwide.

With more and more of its own stores in place, Bodum continued broadening its collection of beautifully designed everyday life products--from kitchen to home. Today Bodum offers its customers everything from the latest coffee- and tea-making products to tabletop, kitchen, storage, textiles, bathroom, and home office products. Some stores also have a café where Bodum's own selection of coffees and teas are served.

The Bodum Group is, and always has been, a 100 percent family-owned business. Today the company operates in 14 different countries with over 700 employees worldwide. Bodum has holding companies in Denmark and Switzerland as well as 12 sales companies, 3 production companies, and a design company called Bodum Design Group, located in Switzerland.

If you're satisfied making just enough coffee for a mug, this will do the trick. But don't expect it leave you a few extra sips.Measuring the container with water and no coffee. It comes right to the point where grinds wouldn't escape around the spout when the plunger is inserted. I use a lot of half-and-half, and with that I'd say I get about 8oz of coffee to add to it.I believe the box says it makes three cups. In their dream.Quality product with a glass beaker and a plastic surround. This thing is deceptively small. But nice if you are overly frugal and just want a cup of coffee.

My husband and I have never really been enthusiastic coffee drinkers, and this is actually our first coffee "maker" of any kind. After doing some research I found that French press generally leads to the best cup, most economical cup of coffee, so we decided to give it a go. I was attracted to the clean, modern look and find the plastic holder to be nicer than the basic stainless steel that my mom had while I was growing up. Overall, this press is very easy to use and clean. The beaker fits tightly in the holder, though it can be removed without too much effort if need be. When we first tried it out we only had fine ground coffee for an automatic drip machine, but it didn't clog the mesh filter at all and there were no grounds in our coffee mugs. This press easily makes four mugs of nice, strong coffee without using an excess amount of coffee grounds. While I can't say I'm ready to give up my Red Bull in favor coffee quite yet my husband is, and we are both very happy with this quality and ease of use of this French press.

While I'm not a hardcore coffee addict, I do try my best to drink at least a cup in the morning. Out of everyone in my family, I am the only one that drinks coffee and so buying a coffee maker didn't make any sense. All this time I basically used a cheap Melitta filter to brew my cup of coffee in the morning and all this time, I thought I was doing the right thing. I mean, what other methods are there to brew just one cup of coffee?

Recently, I learned about the french press and thought it interesting. I did more research on it and basically came to the conclusion that this is one of the best ways to make a great tasting cup (or pot) of coffee. It didn't take long for me to find out that Bodum is a popular brand for french presses and after a long debate, I decided to pick up the 12oz Bodum Kenya model and boy was I glad!

All my life I have never made a better tasting cup of coffee. This simple method of brewing the coffee grinds really does work and the flavor you get out of your grinds is just amazing. The 12oz Kenya model is good enough for people like me who drinks just one cup of coffee at a time. You don't get the full 12oz but it's close enough. After having used the french press for about 6 times so far, not once have I found grinds in my cup of coffee. The strainer really does work to push all the grinds to the bottom of the cup. The secret is to go as slowly as possible when pressing down on the plunger! Also, you must use coarse grinds.

Clean up I do have to say is a bit annoying but it's a small sacrifice to be able to make the best tasting cup of coffee you'll ever brew. After using the press for a bit now, it all feels routine. I don't have a dishwasher so I have to wash everything by hand but it's not that bad once you get use to it. The plunger assembly comes right off and I just soak all the pieces in a container with soapy water.

I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I hope that this french press lasts a long time. Honestly, if you want the best tasting cup of coffee you'll ever brew at home, you really need to try a french press. I'm definitely sold on this and will be telling all my buddies about this as well!

French Press is my favorite way of making coffee so I was glad to find this two cup carafe that will brew just enough but not too much. It is attractive to look at and is the perfect size for my 12 oz mug. Since my husband doesn't drink coffee, I needed a way to brew one single large mug of coffee. I really hate those expensive single cup brewers that infuse your coffee with plastic and force you to use their pods! French Press is a classy, and healthy way to go. Here are the details:

THE SIZE / CAPACITY: Most French Press brewers are too large for single serve but this is perfect if you want a single 12 oz mug. Even though the actual carafe capacity is 17 oz, some of the space in the is taken up by the pressing device and more space is taken up by the coffee grounds that absorb about 4 oz of the water. So this carafe easily produces 12 oz of coffee if you pour in 16 oz of boiling water. This is a perfect medium sized mug for one person, or two small six ounce cups for two people. I enjoy a generous cup of coffee in the morning so I like this capacity.

THE SHAPE: The Bodum New Kenya is my second try at a single serve French Press. The first press I bought was simply too tall and narrow, making it unstable. I was disappointed and went looking again. It was nice to find the Bodum New Kenya because it is just as wide as a full sized press - only the height has been shortened and so it is a fat, short, squatty, stable pot for my coffee. Great! :-)

THE QUALITY: The quality is so-so. As with all French Press brewers, the glass carafe is thin and fragile. I have to be careful not to bump it against anything, and I also fill it with hot tap water while my real coffee water is boiling so that the glass can gradually adjust to the hot temperature of boiling water. This prevents the glass from cracking from the shock of sudden boiling liquid being poured into a cool glass carafe. However, it would be really nice if I could find a coffee press that is sturdy and made of tempered glass. ALSO, the plastic sleeve is nice for protecting the fragile glass, but it is slightly too large, causing the glass to sometimes slip out when I tip the pot to pour my coffee. I have developed the habit of holding the lid secure while I pour out and this prevents unfortunate accidents. I wish it were a bit tighter on the glass carafe. These two drawbacks are minor, but I am deducting 1 star from my review because there is room for improvement here. Still, if I'm reasonably careful, I think this press will last for many years. Just don't buy it expecting it to be tough and unbreakable!

INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS: I also own a 32 oz. French Press and I like that the New Kenya is made to standard dimensions, meaning that I can use this press in my other pot and vice versa. One of the things I didn't like about my first try at a smaller press was that it was made to unusual measurements so that everything was mimi sized. The New Kenya is a standard French Press - just a bit shorter for making less coffee.

So. I like this coffee maker and it is almost perfect for my needs. If they would offer an upgraded version of this same item, with sturdy tempered glass, I would gladly pay a lot more than this cost. There is an awesome looking French Press on the crowd funded circuit that uses straight sided Mason jars as the carafe, wool cozies, and a rock maple pouring spout - it is called The Portland Press and costs around $130.00. However, they are still perfecting the details and at this time it is hard to get one. When it becomes easily available, I plan to pony up the dough to buy it, but till then, I love my New Kenya and use it every single day. It is awesome for brewing tea, as well!

I purchased this little gem to replace a drip coffee percolator, and it does indeed deliver a superior brew of coffee. It's just the right size for one cup to kick-start the day. If you usually drink more than a cup, you will have to restart the process, but for true coffee purists, you shouldn't leave coffee to grow cold and bitter, nor ruin it by nuking. And of course, what you put in this bodum makes a huge difference -- freshly ground coffee beans , preferably shade grown, fair trade, and organic. The Kenya coffee press is easy to use, easy to clean and with the protective stylishly designed sheath, it is less likely to break.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good coffee
Reviewed in Canada on January 19, 2016

It makes good coffee, but the user has to learn a few tricks on his own. You need to stir initially as the ground coffee tends to float and some of it won't even get wet. I thought stirring several times before pushing the filter down would allow the coffee to release more flavor, but this is a very bad idea. A small fraction of the ground coffee will always be very fine, actually powdery. This powder must be allowed to settle at the bottom. If put in suspension by stirring, it will immediately clog the filter and it will be next to impossible to push it down. A lot of powder will be present in the coffee and the taste will be different. So stir at the beginning, and leave the contents undisturbed until you push the filter down. Note that this product is for one regular-size mug. If filled to the maximum practical level, it will give enough coffee to fill a mug up to about a quarter inch from the brim.
