About the author
Landing the kind of role that can change your life for the good - forever - doesn't come from playing by the old rules. David teaches companies not only how to hire the right executives (and keep them), but also candidates, on how to make business decisions that will shape their careers.
As managing partner of Perry-Martel David works with owners who have a compelling vision for their company’s future. By incorporating a unique blend of strategic thinking and applied creativity, he distills that dream into recruitment activities designed to attract the Tier-1 executive talent needed to make the vision - their reality by building a winning executive team, stacked with the best talent money alone can’t buy.
Nicknamed the “Rogue Recruiter” in a cover exposé by The Wall Street Journal, David is one of North America's most sought-after independent executive recruiters. His novel approach to executive headhunting has been documented in two best-selling books, "Hiring Greatness: How to Recruit Your Dream Team and Crush the Competition" (WILEY) and "Executive Recruiting for Dummies" (DUMMIES PRESS). David is also coauthor of "Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters” with Jay Conrad Levinson. His Keynote group presentations are memorable and educational.
David's success and leadership have been recognized with multiple honours and awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Currently CTO (Chief Talent Officer) for the Canadian Advanced Technology Association, other board roles have included: WCT - Women in Communications and Technology, CTHRB – Canadian Technology Human Resources Board, and ICTC/Software Human Resources Council
David lives in Ottawa Canada with his business partner and Rock-Star wife, Anita Martel. They recruit on 5 continents and have been keynote speakers on recruiting and job search across North America and Europe.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2017Can you afford a mis-hire? If the answer is “No,” then avoid this book at your own risk.
If you have ever made a hiring mistake, avoid this book at your own risk.
I’m a recruiter of 15-years. Whenever I ask a hiring manager, “Is this a position on which you can afford a mis-hire?” the answer is, “Of course not!”
Facts I have learned from being in the U.S. Army, corporate America, running a niche recruiting firm, and life are:
Fact 1: Every organization says, “We have a hiring process.”
Fact 2: Everyone’s success is dependent upon those around him/her.
Fact 3: People are hired for skills and fired for attitude (not a cultural or team fit).
Fact 4: And we all have made mis-hires!
In the military, we have “field manuals” – comprehensive reference manuals covering the exact “how to” of best-practice core concepts.
This is your “hiring great people” field manual for winning the war on talent. David Perry and Mark Haluska distill 30+ years of experience into a jam-packed, easy to read manual that needs to reside as an icon on the computer (or sit on the corner of every desk) of anyone involved in hiring.
Competition for top talent is tough and getting tougher. As of this review, the unemployment rate in the US is 4.7% and in the category, “25 years and older, BS degree or higher” the unemployment rate is 2.4%. The last time this rate was lower was 9-years ago (2008).
A few key elements in your “Executive Recruiting for Dummies” field manual:
• Why talent matters
• Assembling your search team
• Defining the right hiring process for your needs
• Creating a powerful position profile
• Tapping the right candidates
• Avoiding superficial evaluation factors
• Landing (and retaining) the right talent
Here’s to making a great hire!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2022This is the 2nd book of Perry and Haluska's that I have purchased and once again I'm not disappointed. This book serves as a step by step, detailed guide to recruiting executives. Although I have achieved some solid success on my own, have great clients, and taking on retainers...when it comes to executive recruiting, I cannot help but wonder how others do it and always wanting to improve and better my own skills. As any great recruiter should!
Perry and Haluska once again offer a plethora of information that anyone can benefit from and take their recruiting game to the next level. From research, to devising a plan, writing a job description, selecting a search committee, vetting candidates, and negotiating to offer (and everything in between!) you will have more than enough to follow the master or add-in some of his amazing advice to your own great recruiting methodology.
Whether you are a seasoned recruiter, a newbie entering executive search, or a leader looking to do it like the pros do...this book will be a valuable tool in your toolbox you will likely refer to again and again!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2020About three years ago, having never had formal recruiter training (was taught as I went by my first recriting employer) I wanted to go out on my own into a different industry and was concerned...not knowing what I don't know yet. I spent a few thousand dollars on three different training programs that I staggered over the course of just over a year trying to take parts of each and create my own style. Each had a different approach, different messaging styles and very little real detail about how to do this job-nothing close to the caliber of this book. If I had known about this book, I could have saved thousands of dollars. This is the book you want on your desk. David covers absolutely everything about this entire process with real life stories/examples( that I use in a sales pitch) throughout to illustrate his points. You will tighten up your game, how you run your desk, dial in your pitch because his examples are interesting (think Apple, professional athletes) and you'll refer to it every week. I was really impressed at the detail of this book. I learned so much. Even if you've been in the business a long time and you haven't read this, get it. You'll be impressed at what you learn. David is the consummate professional.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2022One of the most detailed and well thought out strategies I have seen in executive recruiting books. David Perry pours his life experience, tips, nice to knows and trade secrets into a fantastic guide. I believe this book will be beneficial to organizations recruiting in house, those getting into the recruiting field as well as providing even seasoned veterans different approaches to finding top talent.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2018I am an industry consultant and trainer with 24 years of experience and I always learn something new from David Perry. This book a true gem. David is a peak performer with the ability to deconstruct his own success formula and put it into a systematic process that anyone can follow. I regularly interview the top 10% in the field for my program and David would be at the top of the list in terms of innovation and cutting edge strategies. If you're in the executive search field, or hope to be, this book is a must.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2018I bought the book and had to return it for a refund. This is not a book for people who do recruiting as a profession - it is more of a brief overview about Executive Research. First of all, it is very brief compared to other Dummies books. It gives you no concrete information about the Executive Search industry or search methods. I am surprised because most Dummies books I have purchased were very helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2019Interesting , well documented research
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2019I share David Perry's desire to give a peek behind the curtain. The book is an easy read and very insightful. I have gone back to my own team and we are shaking up how we operate our practice. I say run, don't walk to this book. It will give candidates insight on what to expect in this unique job market, and for hiring managers in vetting Executive Search Firms.
