Truly Impressed! Avid Control surface users- don’t hesitate!!
Just before Christmas in 2021, this item popped up on sale for just $75. We’re an apple family. We have numerous iPads in the house, plus our iPhones, Mac, MacBooks, Apple TV, etc. I’m an audio mixer, and use a product from Avid called the S1. It’s a control surface for Pro Tools that is meant to house a tablet for additional functionality- or eye candy. My older IPad worked, but looked tiny in the cradle, and wasn’t all that useable. I wanted something bigger, but didn’t want to spend the money on yet another iPad. For $75, I was willing to roll the dice.It fits great, looks great, and does exactly what I bought it for.But then I started to explore it deeper. It has built in Alexa with the wake word Amazon. As an audio engineer working from home, I sporadically have actors coming to record. I’ve got Ring doorbells at the entrances, and Echo devices in nearly every room. But for the first time, I can say “Amazon, show me the front door!”, and actually SEE it- and a lot faster than the Ring app on my phone would allow. This was a nice bonus. In fact, in my experience and opinion, Alexa works for much quicker and more reliably than Siri, that I’ve found myself relying on it a lot more. Having Alexa in the tablet to verbalize reminders, appointments, phone calls, etc- all right in front of me, is amazing!I became fascinated with my new toy, and downloaded all the steaming media we subscribe to, plus other apps for news and weather that provide lots of content. I quickly found that I enjoyed watching tv on a 10 inch screen a lot more than on my iPhone. It’s nice to have lunch at the table with my kiddo and share a video we can both easily see and hear. So- this little guy has a great screen and works perfectly for watching shows, movies, YouTube, news, etc.Now- I love my iPhone, and have my music library in iTunes. But when I purchase music, it’s always via Amazon. This is because I get my MP3 files instantly for most albums- but then have a physical disc arrive that often goes unopened. I just like know that HAVE the disc if I ever need to load it again or want to enjoy it in my stereo system. My iPhone can store a decent amount of music internally for when streaming isn’t an option. But I was floored to learn that the HD10 2021 has a micro SD card slot that can store up to 1 TB!!! That’s amazing to me. I can preload entire series, movies, music, photos- anything I need for a long trip or chilling in downtime. For like $25 I added a 400 gig card. Why iPads don’t have this is beyond me.I work with and coach voice actors outside of my day job as a recording engineer. Having that much memory on a tablet and access to an app like WavePad, gives them the ability to record in a pinch while away from their studios. On-screen editing is also fun and easy. I actually added a nifty stylus and case to my HD10, along with a Bluetooth keyboard. It’s essentially a mobile studio, albeit limited. While I haven’t experimented a ton with this- Silk browser (which seems to run on Chrome) allows me to use Source Connect Now to tap into actors or listen to sessions remotely at “CD quality”. Of course you can also use Zoom, Skype, etc.As an apple user, I still want access to my ICloud apps, like Contacts, calendar, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, etc. You can log into your iCloud account and get it all. The trick is to choose “request desktop site”, otherwise you dead-end at “find my device”. You can even log into Apple Music via the browser. So all my apple stuff is still with me!I chose Outlook email to run my various work and personal emails and have a unified calendar. It’s perfect for what I need. For $75, I’m finding myself using it more than I have ever used my iPad. It’s the right screen size for me to actually be productive with it, while also having endless entertainment in reach. Add a case, keyboard and stylus- and you’re good to go!

Cost/benefit is superb: US$ 45 for a full HD screen and very responsive for reading books, surfing the web and viewing movies or listening to music. I cannot say anything about game playing (not my thing) but it does perfectly well for the activities I bought it for. It substituted very nicely both my Kindle and my old Asus tablet. Nothing is perfect:
- I could do without the ads but they show only once every time the screen wakes up (you can pay to get rid of them)
- it comes sort of locked to the Amazon app world but it is very easy to "open" it up and install other apps from the Google world; you WILL lose the warranty but will gain a ton of flexibility app wise, without losing (that I've seen) any functionality from the installed Amazon OS
- the home screen is not very configurable; even when you "open" the OS you will not have the flexibility of the common Android interface; I say "open" in the sense that you can install apps not originally from the Amazon app store, not substitute the Amazon tweaked Android that comes installed
And many good things:
- very good screen, responsiveness is great (for what I use it)
- good sound (not excellent)
- wi-fi works really well, both 2G and 5G
- and the occasional Amazon app that I dislike (Amazon Photos, for instance) I installed something else; another example, I use VLC for watching movies
- the build is excellent, at least from the outside (I am not going to open it to check inside)
Looking at other tablets, I would have to pay 10 times as much to have something as good as my Fire!

So- this little guy has a great screen and works perfectly for watching shows, movies, YouTube, news, etc.

Now- I love my iPhone, and have my music library in iTunes. Why iPads don’t have this is beyond me.

I work with and coach voice actors outside of my day job as a recording engineer.

Of course you can also use Zoom, Skype, etc.

As an apple user, I still want access to my ICloud apps, like Contacts, calendar, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, etc. You can log into your iCloud account and get it all. The trick is to choose “request desktop site”, otherwise you dead-end at “find my device”. You can even log into Apple Music via the browser. So all my apple stuff is still with me!

I chose Outlook email to run my various work and personal emails and have a unified calendar. It’s perfect for what I need.

For $75, I’m finding myself using it more than I have ever used my iPad. It’s the right screen size for me to actually be productive with it, while also having endless entertainment in reach. Add a case, keyboard and stylus- and you’re good to go!

I would continue to purchase Fire tablets. I find them to be of great quality. Very portability, the screen is big enough for easy readability, charging is fast and tablet is suitable for all age range.

...due to decreasing battery life and wear and tear on the charging port..but in fairness I have used it every day for five years and it still works...the USB-C is an improvement over the micro-usb connection...the weight is about the same...the new unit has better ram and storage than the previous unit along with the screen display but for myself the change had been marginal (so far) with the caveat that I only use it to read e-books and stream movies and for that purpose it (IMO) is one of the best bang for the buck items on the market...my only two real complaints are the sound which is nasty/horrible on some movies...you really need headphones or some sort of bluetooth connection to other speakers...the other is that it was extremely difficult to connect to my Altice/Optimum Wifi...it took close to 40 tries before it made a connection...it was easier on my 2017 release...I'm not sure where to place the blame but it was a problem nonetheless...I would seriously suggest upgrading from the 9 to a 15 volt charger. Otherwise I am ok with this unit. Edit: what I do notice is the color is more vibrant than previous models...that's a definite plus...also there is way too much bitchin' about the screen lock...you only see it one time and you move past it...you save some money and a buck is a buck...I've actually had some useful information from the adverts. I would add You cannot rely on just the basic information from the manufacturer that its cord fits a Fire 10. It may or may not. ALL you have to look at is the charging port to see if it's a USB-C or a micro-USB. For example, the previous Fire 10 I have is a 7th gen 2017 release that uses the micro-USB. Again, all you have to do is look at the charging port to see which one it is. My understanding is that the Fire can handle up to a 15W charger and the 9W one supplied by Amazon is too weak for my purposes. It may be they do this out an abundance of caution so that a power surge doesn't damage the unit, but I come from a long line of village idiots so what do I know. I'm told the length of the cord may also affect how fast an item charges. I bought a 10ft one that works fine. My other observation after numerous Fires I have owned is the subject of reinforced/braided cords. My experience is that the braided cords because of their stiffness have a tendency to damage the charging port. And as many of you know that is usually the first to go. Yes, braided may last longer but I'd sooner replace a cord than a Fire. Considerably cheaper in the long run. All I know is that the 15w one works better than the OEM item. Just as an additional item there is this issue of breakage of the cord. I have bought a fair number of cords for my Fires over the years from various companies and have NEVER had a breakage issue. It is true that I have accidentally tripped over and otherwise inadvertently pulled cords from the Fire a number of times which could have resulted in breakage. I have been lucky it didn't but have probably "worn out" the charging ports earlier than they should have because of my clumsiness. Considering I use and charge the Fire every day, regardless of the protestations, I am reasonably certain that most of the complaints from non-braided cords have resulted from that and not from defects in the cords themselves. All that is required is that you have to be careful when inserting and pulling the cord from the device as I have to keep reminding myself.
