Empire Games: A Tale of the Merchant Princes Universe Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,629 ratings

Charles Stross builds a new series with Empire Games, expanding on the world he created in the Family Trade series, a new generation of paratime travellers walk between parallel universes.

The year is 2020. It's seventeen years since the Revolution overthrew the last king of the New British Empire, and the newly-reconstituted North American Commonwealth is developing rapidly, on course to defeat the French and bring democracy to a troubled world. But Miriam Burgeson, commissioner in charge of the shadowy Ministry of Intertemporal Research and Intelligence—the paratime espionage agency tasked with catalyzing the Commonwealth's great leap forward—has a problem. For years, she's warned everyone: "The Americans are coming." Now their drones arrive in the middle of a succession crisis.

In another timeline, the U.S. has recruited Miriam's own estranged daughter to spy across timelines in order to bring down any remaining world-walkers who might threaten national security.

Two nuclear superpowers are set on a collision course. Two increasingly desperate paratime espionage agencies try to find a solution to the first contact problem that doesn't result in a nuclear holocaust. And two women—a mother and her long-lost daughter—are about to find themselves on opposite sides of the confrontation.

I just am loving this series reboot, or post-quel or whatever and just finished book 2. As a huge stross fan, i started the original series but just got bored with it and quit. It was many years ago, but as i recall it just got too bogged down in the hereditary politics of the Clan and overly detailed economic and technological planning, while the plot lagged. And I'm a big fan of deep, complex world building and Stross' very technical and heavily sociopolitical style. But in any case, I find this series far more enjoyable and interesting. It leans more into modern tech and near future speculative sci-fi, while also diving into slightly grander issue of how the Clan got their abilities, forerunner ultra-high tech races, black holes and other "big idea" stuff within the Clan-accessible universes. At the same time it also addresses lots of sociopolitical issues that are very relevant today and digs into a lot of fun spy craft. I rarely give 5 star ratings but this was a homerun book for my tastes. Was very sad to realize the 3rd book isn't published yet when i finished up book 2 last night.

Empire Games (Empire Games #1) by Charles Stross

I generally eschew alternate history books and series. This is because I tend to find them not well done, nor developed. This series is a happy exception. Not that the series is necessarily happy, but you know. We now find ourselves very much in the present, and in an America that I recognize all too well. Also we have some of our old and dear friends along, as well as a batch of new, young and fresh faces.
The world development is (again) wonderfully consistent and detailed enough to be believable. The characters are many layered and interact well. The plot is as twisted and delicious as you have come to expect from Sir Charlie.
I just hope writes the rest of the series in a timely manner!

This was my first foray into the Merchant Princes series. Somehow I didn't feel drawn into the prior books. But I tried this novel, the first in a new series of stories, and I was hooked. I don't know that I'll go back and read the previous stories, but I will definitely be waiting for the next installment of this series.

I've read most of Stross' books and, to me, this is his most approachable book in a long while. What I liked about it was the cast of characters as well as the way the story was told. While not all characters were fully detailed (nor did they need to be) the main ensemble was excellent. In particular, Grandpa Kurt was fascinating. One potential trap Stross avoided was simply alternating between story lines (and timelines); instead he let a series of scenes play out (constantly reminding the reader where they were). That helped me stay focused and engaged. Stross also avoided getting too grimdark, which I think has hurt some of his Laundry Files stories. He keeps an even tone and makes sure there is always some light ahead, even if things look dark at the moment.

Some few little things bugged me. For instance, how does Timeline 2 know to call another place Timeline 4 when they haven't discovered Timeline 3 yet? But that was probably a necessary construct to keep readers oriented, because otherwise it would be easy to get lost in the multiple plot lines. Notwithstanding the little things, I found this an excellent story with interesting characters, set in a complex multiverse.

I am happy to give this novel five stars and to recommend it to those new to Charles Stross or to his Merchant Princes multiverse.

I almost didn't buy this because the previous Merchant series wound up as such a disappointment. That would have been a big mistake, Stross definitely brought his A game to this one.

This novel manages to be a modern security state thriller (the protagonist is recruited by an alt-DHS, in a world where they are more concerned about visitors from parallel universes than with terrestrial terrorists), and a cold war spy novel (both a fictional cold war as two nuclear-armed parallels start to interact, and some tantalizing callbacks to our own cold war).

It's not perfect - Stross can't resist a few of the clumsy "Jesusland" insults that have tended to mar his writing. But he succeeds at taking his premise of walking to parallel worlds, thinking about what that would mean for economics, politics and espionage, and then drawing out a satisfying story that shows it all to the reader. One might quibble that the characters are thin and cliched - nobody other than the protagonist and her biological and adoptive families has any real depth - but I still found it a great read.

The original series also started off very strong, and then it seemed like each subsequent book got worse. So my devout hope is that the author has a plan to keep the whole trilogy at the level of this one.

Definitely recommended if you're any kind of Stross fan. Maybe not the best place to start if you are new to the author as it relies a fair amount on the characters/events of the earlier series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful multiverse story

Stross always writes interesting books. The way he deals with a multiverse's infinite possibilities is interesting without becoming boringly repetitive. His protagonists are interesting and their journeys drive a walloping good story,
Empire Games is the first book in a new series set shortly after the ending of the first series. Old characters meet new, known problems resurface and escalate, and completely new twists are added that makes one think "But of course! Why hadn't I thought of that?" and speculate wildly as to the question where the new series will take us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cloak and dagger, state-level espionage with the odd classic SF-type bombshell !
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 2017
I've followed this author for years. he sets a high standard, and this is right up there as one of his best. It took a little while to get my head around the universe he was building, but it's worth persevering with! It moves along at a cracking pace, but the story is tightly written so it's easy to keep up. The book harks back to the attitudes that were prevalent during the collective insanity we called the Cold War. I found this depressingly realistic (because it happened after all), with the cloak and dagger state-level espionage, and the dizzying permutations of right thing vs wrong thing combined with good reasons vs bad reasons. However, every now and then Stross throws in a classic SF-type bombshell, and you're back to "wait a minute . . what??"
Very much looking forward to the next instalment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking and multifaceted alternative future
Reviewed in Canada on January 21, 2017
A compelling story with engaging characters and moral choices fully costed out - this book is difficult to put down. I read the first six books in this series a year ago, and I feel the author has used his time away from this particular sci-fi universe (sixth novel in 2010, seventh and current in 2017) to produce a novel that compares favorably to the best of its predecessors. Curiosity and commitment, pragmatism and idealism, loyalty and revenge color a fast-moving plot. The book is very well done!
