Photographer's Guide to the Fujifilm X100S: Getting the Most from Fujifilm's Advanced Digital Camera Paperback – November 25, 2013

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 102 ratings

This book is a complete guide to the operations, features, menus, and controls of the Fujifilm X100S camera, providing guidance not only about how to accomplish things with the camera, but when and why to use certain features. The book covers topics such as autofocus, manual focus, depth of field, aperture priority, shutter priority, HDR (high dynamic range) photography, and macro photography. It also includes discussions of the camera's special features, including its "hybrid" optical and electronic viewfinder system. The book's more than 300 color photographs provide illustrations of the camera's controls and menus, and include examples of the photographs that can be taken using the many creative settings of the camera, including the Film Simulation settings; various menu options such as Dynamic Range, Shadow Tone, and Highlight Tone; the Advanced Filter settings, with effects such as Toy Camera, Dynamic Tone, and Miniature; and the camera's features for continuous shooting, including a special capability for taking multiple exposures of a single scene. In addition, the book provides introductions to topics such as infrared photography, street photography, and astrophotography. The book also includes a full discussion of the video recording abilities of the X100S, which can record high-definition (HD) video with stereo sound. In three appendices, the book provides details about accessories available for the camera, sets forth a list of web sites and other resources for further information, and includes a section with helpful "quick tips" that give insights into how to take advantage of the camera's features in the most efficient ways possible. The book includes a complete table of contents and full index.

I truly love this camera. I also have a Canon 6D and for image quality the Fuji stands up great. It has become my standard take everywhere travel camera. I love having manual controls and everything feels natural to use. I feel like taking photos is fun and this makes me more creative. The silent operation also helps give confidence for street photography and people are not at all intimidated by this camera. The images all look great and the RAW files have a really impressive dynamic range. I've also been really impressed at the sharpness and resolution. In some side by side shots the Fuji has beaten my wife's OMD EM5 hands down. The out if camera jpg images are do good that I'm almost convinced I could stop shooting raw in many situations, although coupled with VSCO and Lightroom gives great result for raw processing. I use film pack 4 and love the film simulations available.

The most amazing feature is the optical view finder. The first time you look through it and see the overlaid information you suddenly realise that it just makes no sense that nobody else did this before - it's how all viewfinders should be.

I've also tried some long exposure star shots and they works amazingly well. The camera has really impressively low noise levels even at high ISO. I've taken some great hand held shots of cities at night when I was without a tripod and they worked brilliantly.

I can not recommend this camera highly enough. I love it. The main negatives are bad battery life but you can buy cheap generic extra batteries and if you use the optical view finder mainly then you get a reasonable number of shots.

When reading PHOTOGRAPHERS GUIDE TO THE FUJIFILM X100S, I kept coming back to one question: Is the author really good at explaining how this camera works or is the X100S so easy to understand that it doesn't require a lot of explanation. In the end, I decided that it was a combination of both.

Most second party guides are a rehash of the manual, while I found that Alexander White approached the process by dividing the book into a few chapters that get you started and then subsequently following up with chapters that go into detailed descriptions on how the various aspects of the camera work. In other words, you can read the first part and start shooting. Then when you are comfortable with the camera, you can return to the book and learn about it in greater detail.

I bought this in both the Kindle and paper format. Each has its advantages. The Kindle version has better pictures than the paper back because you are viewing digital photos in their native form. On the other hand, it's nice to be able to physically hold the manual and bookmark the old fashioned way when reading an instructional work.

Alexander writes in a conversational style that conveys the information in an easy to understand manner. I haven't read any of his manuals before, but would consider buying one if I bought another camera. Unfortunately for him, I think I have found the only digital camera I will ever need in the X100S.

One of the things that would make reviews more helpful is information about the intended audience for a book, so here goes. I am a reasonably knowledgeable amateur photographer. I have been photographing for 10 years on and off in both in film and digital. I understand most of the concepts in photography but I am new to the X100S.

This book has been a huge help. Not only does it cover all of the controls and menu settings in great detail, but very importantly it tells you when and why you should use a particular feature. The text is very well written. As a technical author myself, I am impressed by the clarity of writing. I haven't yet had to read a sentence twice.

Other reviews have mentioned that the book can be repetitive. This is true but in a good way; for example when discussing a menu setting, the author might mention that a physical control (knob, switch, etc) can be used in conjunction with that setting. Then when discussing the physical control, the author might mention the effect of some menu settings. This has served to consolidate my knowledge; at all times the repetition has been necessary and helpful.

If you are a professional photographer then you will not need this book; you can almost certainly figure it all out for yourself. If you are anywhere below that standard then this book is 100% necessary. I thoroughly recommend this book. Having spent nearly NZ$2000 on the camera I am determined to make full use of it.

Full marks to Alexander White. I wish all instruction manuals were written as clearly as this one.

This book functions very well as an in depth manual for the Fujifilm x100s, guiding me logically through all of the capabilities and settings available with this camera, starting with a basic tutorial for setting the camera up for the first shot. The book also explains subtleties, like what it means when shutter speed and aperture are displayed in white versus blue versus red and when and why the focus frame is white versus green, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of experienced photographers out there with no need for this book. But, I've been using a Canon Rebel for about 10 years and I relied very heavily on a lot of automatic features, program shooting, zoom, etc. This camera represents a great leap for me in complexity and this book has saved me many hours of confused experimentation. I agree with other reviewers that the pictures in this book are pedestrian, absolutely boring (sorry Alexander S. White!). After reading some reviews, I had feared that boring pictures would be an obstacle to remaining engaged with the book, but I ordered it anyway because I really needed this kind of thorough introduction to the features of the camera. I'm happy to say that the boring pictures are no obstacle at all and serve their purpose, to inform, just fine. I hope this helps you decide whether this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the owner’s manual.

No doubt the Fujifilm X100S Owner’s Manual has all the technical information you need, but Alexander White has found it all for you and presents it in an easily understood, uncomplicated form. He has followed the forward and back cross references and delivers the answer without you having to do so.
I have his Panasonic Lumix LX5 & Nikon P900 guides as well and I find I can open all three at random and learn something new about each camera. Do that with the owner’s manuals and you get the bare facts, but no understanding of the vast array of features the camera possesses. That is because Alexander White has put in the countless hours required to make sense of the manual, so that we don’t have to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uitstekende handleiding
Reviewed in the Netherlands on September 24, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a well written book by someone who is clearly a good writer as well as an experienced photographer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 6, 2014
I have the Kindle version of this book, which I read on the IPad, and the formatting is spot on. Not always the case with reference books. As for the content, this is a well written book by someone who is clearly a good writer as well as an experienced photographer.

It is far superior to the Fuji manual and it continues to amaze me that manufacturers make so little effort to produce good documentation for their products. If they did their job properly there would be no need for third party books such as this.

Alexander White seems to specialise in writing this type of user guide and those I have seen have all been of the same high standard. At £4.99 for the Kindle edition it is excellent value.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must if you have the X100S

Excellent manual that although does not go beyond the Fuji manual enclosed with the camera, it does clarify most subjects in a manner much more efficient and clear than the manual does. Very recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good guide - ultra complete - huge work !
Reviewed in France on February 19, 2014
This book is an very complete guide for the Fujifilm X100s.
Even if the information given is based on 1.03 firmware version, I think it's still 98% relevant if you have the latest version (1.10)
Alexander White explains simply and clearly whatever one may wonder about the X100s. I cannot see a related topic which is not explained with pedagogy.
100+ images (screen capture, photos...) are given to illustrate the prose.
If you own a X100s, I bet you will enjoy a lot this guide (and even if you don't own it, general photography explanations are valuable)
Merci beaucoup Alexander !
