Even sounds *great* over the noise of the road!
I've had my SoundLink Mini for a little over a year now and I still love it!It was originally purchased because I was moving cross country. I wanted digital music/audiobooks, but didn't want to sink any money into my 15 year old minivan in terms of updating the audio system to accommodate Bluetooth. Getting a new stereo unit - even a reasonably priced one - installed in my car would be costly, particularly if I paid to have them hook the new unit up to the controls on my steering wheel. And why would I want that functionality removed during an upgrade? Then I thought - what if I sell this car soon? Or it's old... what if it dies? I figured I could spent a couple hundred bucks on a nice Bose portable unit and get something I could use *after* my trip, whether or not I was in the car, and I was right. The SoundLink Mini is a little base-heavy, but it still has a decent range. It is a single speaker, which I don't believe can be linked to another unit to create stereo sound, so there is also that sound quality loss. There is no way I am anything but a sound layman, but most people will probably agree with me and find that this unit sounds amazing for what it is. Where SoundLink Mini really shines is in a clear and loud audibility!I used this unit, sitting on my dashboard or nestled on the console between the driver/passenger seats for a 2000+ mile cross country drive. We listened to music - electronica type stuff to keep my going while my driving partner slept - but mostly we listened to audiobooks. And even over the sound of the road, which is HORRIBLE in the Mid West where the roads are in terrible condition and/or under construction, everything was loud and clear as a bell.Sometimes I still take the SoundLink Mini with me in the old van - cause it works great - but mostly it gets to sit by the bed to play meditation music, or to the kitchen to play "while you work" music. And if it sounds great in the car, it sounds *fantastic* when you set it up in your home with a wall, nice cubby or something behind it, as the sound comes out the back as well as the front of the unit. With the right acoustics this thing will blow you away.Bluetooth works pretty well. The SoundLink pairs/syncs easily to both of my Kindles and to my iPhone. During playback, it does occasionally have hiccups to the connection (which usually sound like a little pop along with a very brief seizure to the sound), but that varies according to unit placement and what is going on in the environment. We have Wi-fi-- multiple iPads, iPhones and Kindles, computers in a large multi-story environment... the "toobs" probably get a bit "jambalaya" sometimes. The unit holds a charge quite well. Even at a rather high volume (such as needed for driving on the freeway/highway, for example) the SoundLink Mini may well give you a good 6-7+ hours of playback. Mine did. I barely needed the car adapter even when pulling 8-10 hour days. While I have yet to use it for those kind of durations since the initial purchase and use, the unit barely ever needs charging, and charges pretty darn quickly. It also can playback while charging on its little pad. I have zero complaints in the battery-life department. In terms of durability - even though I tote this around the house and in the car - I am very gentle with it. I try to never let anything brush up against the meshy metal front or back of the unit. I also bought, and have never once removed, the original Bose cover (in a somewhat ugly orange which I may someday replace with a nice Mint!). The case really provides protection for the brushed metal part of the case - excluding the mesh where the sound comes out - so I would suggest one if you have any worries, but otherwise with careful handling the SoundLink Mini should last a long time and the case would just be extra insurance against normals bumps. The SoundLink feels like a brick, in terms of weight as well as sturdiness. The only thing which may be considered somewhat flimsy is the charging pad/plug, which are thin plastic and don't have the quality feel of the rest of the unit, but I haven't had either give out on me yet, either.Added a pic of my SoundLink Mini, with cover and showing the charging base and cable. (Note: You can see a bit of my old JBL Creature Speakers - still love those guys and haven't been able to consider replacing them because for their age they sound pretty great and I love their Pac-Man ghostie look! :D )Hope all this info helps!

In almost ten years of writing reviews for Amazon, this is only the third time that I've awarded five stars to a Bose product. Yes, the SoundLink Mini is just that good. I love mine, and think it's worth every penny (and then some) of its $199 price. But with so many choices out there--many at a fraction of the price--is this the mini Bluetooth speaker for you? Here are five things to help you decide:

    1) Do you care enough about beautiful design, high quality materials and superb craftsmanship to pay a premium for them? Does "pride of ownership" figure into your buying decisions? If yes, this is the speaker for you. To hold it in your hands--not to mention listen to it--is to understand why it costs what it does. In terms of design, materials and construction, there's not another mini bluetooth speaker out there that can touch it. But if these things aren't priorities for you, there are much cheaper speakers whose sound compares favorably with the Bose.

    2) Are you looking for "the best" sound quality? If yes, this *might* be the speaker for you. I actually don't believe there's such a thing as best sound quality, because personal preferences vary. One person's "great bass" is another person's "boomy bottom end," etc. And designing ANY mini speaker is all about compromises. What Bose engineers have produced is room-filling sound that is wonderfully musical and natural, regardless of the type of music, and audio quality that has many strengths and no obvious weaknesses. There's no doubt that it's amongst the best in this class of speakers. My first experience hearing the Soundlink Mini was almost magical, and I had to ask, "How is that even possible?" However... if item #1 above is not important to you, there are a number of much less expensive speakers, such as the under $60 Sharkk, with sound that has been compared very favorably to the Bose... not "better," but in the same league, and you should check them out.

    3) Do you judge a product by how many added "features" it has? If yes, the Soundlink Mini will disappoint you. You get Aux In capabillity and that's about it. Bose designed this to be the best mini bluetooth speaker it could build, and it does that job superbly. No glitches in pairing or playback--it just works. Terrific sound, amongst the best in class. A brilliant charging dock/portable charger combo. Terrific 7-hour battery life. Oh, and about that Aux In port: a good friend plugged his electric guitar into it and the sound quality as he played through the Soundlink Mini just blew me away. Personally, I find that I rarely use added features in a feature-laden product, and I prefer design to be focused on what a product is supposed to do.

    4) Do you care about great customer service and products that last? In this regard, I don't think there's another audio company that compares to Bose. On the phone or at their stores, they really do strive for customer satisfaction, and they're one of the only companies that will give you 30 days to try out a product with a no-questions-asked refund guaranteed if you're not happy with it. As for longevity, the Soundlink Mini is a good example of their bulletproof construction quality--I've also had a Wave music system for ten years that still works like new. Once, about five years ago, the CD transport stopped working, and Bose replaced it for $50.

    5) Do you plan on buying accessories? Well, I've saved the worst for last, because Bose views accessory pricing as an opportunity to gouge its own customers. Mini travel bag? $45. Car charger or extra portable charger? $30 each. Soft silicone cover? $25. Yes, they're all nice and nicely designed, but nothing extraordinary, and the obvious overpricing just leaves you feeling taken by Bose. Biggest joke amongst accessories: Bose sells a Soundlink Mini Speaker + Travel Bag "bundle," which suggests some sort of deal, but it's the same price as if you bought them separately. Fortunately, there are much cheaper third party solutions available.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review, and I hope you find it helpful in making a buying decision! I do try to answer questions posted in the comments section.

(This is a re-post from my UE BOOM review, which I ended up keeping. TL;DR The Soundlink Mini sounds fuller than the BOOM, has a user replaceable battery, but feels more fragile, sounds more localized, and lacks some features that you may love (even though you don't know you want them) in a bluetooth speaker.)

I recently moved into an apartment with a balcony. A pretty nice balcony. The kind of balcony that sells you on living in an apartment. Understand?

So, I'm sitting on this balcony, overlooking the city, drinking a beer, and I think to myself, "I should be listening to Paul Simon's 'Graceland' album instead of cars and busses driving by." Whip out my phone, start playing the album, and I can't hear a damn thing. And thus begins the search for a bluetooth speaker.

I read some reviews, everybody was talking about the UE BOOM and the Bose Soundlink Mini. None of the stores around me had both, so I couldn't do a side-by-side test. So, I ordered both from Amazon, knowing I'd return one and have to eat the shipping cost.

I got the UE BOOM first, and I was blown away by how good it sounded. Granted, I'm streaming 320kbps MP3s from my phone to a battery-powered speaker, so it's not like listening to music in a studio. But, man, does this thing sound good. And it gets LOUD. I mean, too loud. Obviously, when it's too loud, you turn it down with the conveniently large and tactile volume buttons. But this would be great for an outdoor dinner party, cookout, pool party, whatever. And the speaker audibly alerts you when you've connected your device to it. A bongo noise comes pa-rum-pum-puming out, and you're ready to play.

My second day with the unit, I had a call come in while I was listening to music. The UE BOOM also works as a speakerphone--it has a built in microphone--and the call sounded great on both ends. It's a functionality I thought I wouldn't use, but it sure beats wearing my headset for work conference calls everyday. Sounds better, too.

The case is rubberized, and the grill surrounding the speakers feels metallic. It's a solid-feeling product, and the cylindrical shape makes it easy to pack in a shoulder bag for trips. And, it fits in the cupholder in my car, meaning I have a legal hands-free device when I'm driving.

I also got the Bose Soundlink Mini. Which sounds INCREDIBLE. I didn't believe anything could sound better than the BOOM, and the Soundlink freaked my earholes. I mean, you get deep, full lows that you can't get with the UE BOOM (unless you use an EQ to do bass boost, which I do on Google Music, but it doesn't sound as good). If you're looking for bass only, the Soundlink is your pick. Lacks some of the UE BOOM feature set (no speakerphone, no audible battery announcement, proprietary battery charger, etc.), but it sounds good. The Soundlink is also designed with a user-replaceable battery, which is a big deal. People on the internet are worried about the BOOM because the battery is not "meant" to be replaceable. But the instruction manual for the BOOM explains how to remove the battery for disposal, so I'm thinking you could buy a new one and stick it in there. But I digress.

I decided against the Soundlink for a few reasons. First, you get those deep booming lows, which is great. But you ALWAYS get deep, booming lows. Even on spoken word. So, I'm listening to a podcast, and my table shakes whenever there's a male voice. There's no EQ, and no app built for the phone (unlike the UE BOOM), so I'd have to download an EQ app and play with it constantly. Second, the Soundlink sound distribution is very localized. The BOOM speakers are on both sides of the device, which means you get 360 degrees of sound. One friend said during a sound test, "I can tell where the music is coming from with the Bose, but with the BOOM, I just hear the music all around me." Third, I felt like the Soundlink was more fragile. Yes, it's an all-metal housed device--but that just made me worried. Worried about scratches, and drops, and wear and tear. The BOOM is rubberized, and water resistant, and has a carabiner clip, so you feel comfortable with it rattling around. And I couldn't fit the Soundlink in my cupholder.

Bottom line, both the UE BOOM and the Soundlink are great devices. If I wanted a speaker to keep inside my apartment at all times, I might pick the Soundlink. However, I've got my turntable, and my Polk AudioMonitor 70s, and who needs more than that? So, for outside usage, traveling, and the benefit of speakerphone, I've gotta pick the UE BOOM.

Happy to answer questions, if folks have them.
