Google Fi is the latest Google app to get the Material You redesign. The app, which lets subscribers of the Google-owned MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) control their account, is receiving a new update with UI modernization and Dynamic Color theming.

You probably already know what Google’s Material You design language is all about. Introduced with Android 12, it brings new shapes, new colors, new animations, and plenty more subtle changes that make the navigation experience across the system consistent. With Dynamic Color theming, you get to personalize the UI elements like never before. It lets you extract colors from your wallpaper and apply them to the active system theme.

As you can see in the attached screenshots below, the bottom navigation bar on the Google Fi app is now taller with pill-shaped indicators replacing the existing color-coded indicators. Various buttons across the app also get pill-shaped outlines instead of rounded rectangles. The Dynamic Color theming applies to everything from account avatars to devices. First reported by 9to5Google, the Material You redesign for Google Fi doesn’t change the shape of the cards in the “Account” section though.

This design overhaul follows the recent rollout of a new cover graphics by Google. It appears at the top of every tab and had remained unchanged for several years. Google Fi also recently updated its phone plans. It reduced the prices for its two Unlimited plans while offering more high-speed data. The entry-level Flexible plan didn’t get any price cut but it now includes unlimited calling within Canada and Mexico at no extra cost.

Material You redesign reaches the Google Fi app

Since introducing the Material You design language last year, Google has rolled out the overhaul to most of its apps. Google Fi is the latest to get the new design language. A few are still remaining though. Google Maps doesn’t yet support Dynamic Color theming, while Google Fit is awaiting the update too. Google Home also lacks the Material You flourishes. Hopefully, these apps will join the party soon.

Meanwhile, if you’re a Google Fi subscriber, you should get the new design update for the app soon. The changes are reportedly rolling out with version V60 for Pixel phones, though a server-side update might be required to trigger the changes for your account.
