Ever since the success of ChatGPT, Microsoft has been hard at work trying to incorporate Artificial Intelligence in every aspect of our lives. According to Semafor, Microsoft has now made an internal demo that allows players to control Minecraft using AI. This means that players may only have to give instructions to the AI, and it will complete tasks, such as building structures, on its own.

Although playing a game like Minecraft may seem easy considering the power of AIs these days, Minecraft’s open-ended nature was a big challenge for the company as there are multiple ways to do the same task. For instance, there are multiple ways to build a car in Minecraft based on the available supplies. Therefore, vague commands like “build a car” may not produce the desired in-game action.

Last year, Microsoft showcased a similar demo where the company collaborated with OpenAI, the minds behind ChatGPT, to train a neural network to play Minecraft by analyzing over 70,000 hours of recorded gameplay footage of real individuals playing the game. While the specific AI model used in the current demo has not been disclosed, Microsoft reportedly did not use the Bing Prometheus AI model this time around.

A potential use case for this technology

Currently, Microsoft has no intention of integrating this AI technology into a public release of Minecraft, but it could have a significant impact on individuals who have difficulty operating traditional controllers or using a mouse and keyboard, potentially revolutionizing gaming for them.

However, it’s important to note that tech demos like this are commonplace in large companies without any real-world application. Currently, the AI can only handle repetitive or complex tasks in games like Minecraft, meaning players would still have to do creative work like construction. Therefore, this technology is unlikely to replace conventional gameplay entirely anytime soon.
