PlayStation accounts now support passkeys for more secure logins

Passkeys are now available for your PlayStation account for a little bit of extra security. Passkeys are still fairly new and aren’t available across all accounts across the web. But they’re slowly starting to expand to more and more stuff. Google in particular has been a big proponent of passkey and has already added passkey support to many of its own products. Including Gmail and many others.

It was only a matter of time before Sony added support for passkey to the PlayStation account system. It’s not entirely clear how widespread the passkey support is. Sony didn’t really announce the rollout of passkeys and it only seems to be mentioned on the North American PlayStation support account on X. With that being said, it may or may not be rolled out to other countries yet. Even in the US, some users may not see any alerts to set up passkeys. However, you can go here to set things up.

Passkeys are intended to be a more secure login process than using passwords. In fact passkey completely replaces passwords. Instead of remembering a password and having to type it in every time, the PlayStation account passkey solution has you using the same login method you would use for your device using biometrics. Such as a fingerprint or face login. You will need to set this all up. But once done it should make the whole process of signing into your PSN account faster and more convenient/safer going forward.

PlayStation account passkey may have issues on Android

Passkeys are absolutely something worth considering if you value your account security. That being said, the implementation of it for Android users may have some problems at the moment. Over on the gaming forum ResetEra, one user has posted about their experience setting up a passkey for their account, which has resulted in them being locked out of it. They mention that they use Android. Users in the comments mention using the passkey setup from their iOS devices with no issues. With this in mind, you may want to avoid setting up the passkey if you use Android for the time being.

In the meantime, you can and should still use 2-step verification for your account. If you haven’t already set this up for PSN account (or anything else) it’s something we’d highly recommend doing as soon as possible.
