A 34-year-old Glen Burnie woman who supervised evidence storage for the Annapolis Police Department pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing $6,000 in cash confiscated from drug suspects and being stored in police department lockers.
Kathleen Ann Spalt, of the 100 block of Castle Harbor Way, pleaded guilty to felony theft before Circuit Court Judge Raymond G. Thieme Jr.
Judge Thieme set sentencing for Dec. 6.
Deputy state’s attorney William D. Roessler said Spalt, a civilian employee, was supervisor of the police evidence and property section from Sept. 11, 1990, to March 12, 1993.
When a new supervisor took over in March, an inventory of the property held as evidence showed that some $11,000 in cash was missing, Mr. Roessler said.
Ms. Spalt, whose job was to take cash confiscated in drug raids and deposit it into various escrow accounts, was one of three people who had control of the cash, he said.
When confronted about the missing cash, Ms. Spalt admitted taking up to $6,000, Mr. Roessler said.
A department spokesman said prosecutors believe Ms. Spalt stole all the missing money.
She resigned when she was charged June 14, city police said.
Mr. Roessler said Ms. Spalt used the money to pay household expenses, make her car payments and pay her car insurance.
