Cranes and tractors

The cranes and tractors BAS uses in Antarctica are:

  • Caterpillar D4H and D5N low-ground-pressure bulldozers
  • Canadian Foremost/Track Industries 110c tracked carriers fitted with Palfinger hydraulic cranes

All these vehicles are fitted with Webasto pre-heating equipment that heats the engine to its operating temperature before starting. Even at -30°C the engines start easily.

All burn aviation kerosene which remains fluid to -60°C although this results in a 10% reduction in power.
