A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

An underrated gem of a city, clean, modern, peaceful, and cheery. Many interesting festivals on throughout the year, and vibrant nightlife (if you know where to look). The city is also ergonomically designed for optimal traffic flow, so its rapidly booming population is well managed, and there is little to no crowding.
It is full of not only national landmarks and iconic brutalist architecture, but also exciting nooks and crannies for explorers. Try checking out Braddon/Civic, Dickson, or even the far south area of Tuggeranong for eat spots or things to do.

I was there on business and visiting friends.
Did not do much sight seeing. The food at Rodney's nursery was good but the birds were an issue as they left deposits on our table while we were sitting there.
There are some good restaurants in the area.

The War memorial was especially good, moving thought provoking
The Portrait Gallery and Art Gallery were great as was Parliament House. Booked tours improved the experience. The Information Centre and Arboretum were great too. People we met everywhere were kind and helpful. The food at the Wine Room was excellent! Very easy to get around Canberra and we were extremely lucky that public transport was free. Parking was inexpensive overall. I would like to return to Canberra and see more

The layout of Canberra's inner city streets is conducive to a pleasant driving experience even to people with no knowledge of the city and especially when driving a vintage car.
We visited the National and Portrait galleries in the afternoon after our car show. Then visited the Sailing Club for a drink and some afternoon entertainment. Canberra has a great Cosmopolitan vibe and we will return. An added bonus was no parking fees on the weekends.

There is so much to see and do.
There is so much to see and do. All of the activities are either free or at a very low cost. We visited the Visitor Centre (the lady there told us that public transport is currently free). The Visitor Centre has a great display showing the history of the city. We were given a map showing which bus to use to get to each attraction. We had a boat cruise on Lake Burley Griffin and also visited the Botanic gardens, the War Memorial, Quetacon, the Arboretum, the Royal mint.

We always choose the Kurrajong when in Canberra, as it's a known quantity for us and location is convenient, being walking distance to the art galleries, Old Parliament House etc. It has a more personal feel than some other larger hotels, and we've found the staff invariably friendly and helpful. There are dedicated electric car destination chargers outside the entrance, and we hope to make use of those next time we visit!
We enjoyed our stay at the Mercure. We liked the fact that the hotel was a heritage building. We loved the on-site pub. It was very good value. The hotel was about a 20-minute walk from the city centre. Overall, we would have enjoyed the location and Canberra more if we had rented a car. The tourists sites are very spread out. It would also have been nice to visit some places outside of the city.
I've stayed here at least five times and this latest visit matched up to all my previous visits. It's a cosy, exceptionally well run small hotel. Staff friendly, very professional and the hotel is near most of Canberra's best attractions. I also love the two common rooms. They are comfortable, well appointed, light and have lovely views.
Reception staff were very helpful throughout my visit. The room was very nice. Room service meals were also very good. The location of the hotel was very good for me to explore Canberra on foot.
