Typically Swiss, Interlaken has an incredible location: on the Aar River linking nearby Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and in the shade of magnificent Alpine mountains including famous Jungfrau. The wonderful views are seen flying into Interlaken Airport.
The lakes are great spots for sailing, swimming or simply having a picnic along the peaceful shores. The area also has its fair share of high-adrenaline pursuits including bungee jumping, paragliding and river rafting.
In winter it’s all about the Interlaken skiing and snowboarding, with options including the fabulous Jungfrau Winter Sport Region and family-friendly areas with easy slopes. The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn glacier is UNESCO World Heritage-listed, and the Jungfraujoch mountain railway takes you to the Top of Europe, the highest railway station in Europe. For a break from skiing, Europe’s longest toboggan run is a thrill a minute. Après-ski ranges from bars and discos to cosy restaurants serving specialities like fondue and raclette.
The town offers great views of the snowy peak of Jungfrau, best seen from Höheweg which also has a Japanese garden and lots of shops selling all things Swiss. Also here is the Hotel Victoria Jungfrau and the Hotel Royal St Georges, 2 Swiss Heritage Sites that are just some of the Interlaken accommodation options on Booking.com.

We stayed for two nights, only had one full day, and could have used one more day - or more. We did take a train/gondola up to Murrën. It was worth the trip!! Didn't get to paragliding but that looks like a fabulous experience.

Some warm weather activities shut down when we visited Interlaken over Veterans Day weekend. Check schedules when visiting this time of year for boats, castles and cable cars; though, still lots to see, do and taste. Interlaken was overcast, but Niederhorn was bright and sunny above. It’s about 30-40 min (free) bus ride to cable car station, then 18 min cable car ride to summit. Hike along the ridge is awesome (10.7 km, 3-4 hours, moderate difficulty)!
If taking Golden Pass panoramic train from/to Montreux, confirm the route is operating. Currently SBB is providing a nice tour bus for the one hour part of that trip between Montbovon and Montreux, due to track maintenance. This applies to both directions of travel. If you don’t mind the bus part, any ticket for travel between Interlaken and Montreux lets you ride the Golden Pass route right now between Interlaken and Montbovon, and includes the bus part between Montbovon and Montreux, e.g., ticket types IR, RE, etc.

Didn’t enjoy it very much as it’s just so touristy and for me did not represent the Switzerland I like so much, I would recommend spending more time in Luzern and Bern.
Give Interlaken a miss unless your going on to one of the site seeing destinations there.

Interlaken is the place for activity holidays with lots of...
Interlaken is the place for activity holidays with lots of younger people staying there, great things to do in Alpine surroundings, one of the more lively and vibrant towns we stayed in Switzerland.
Plenty of shops, activities, cafes, bars, restaurants, etc.
Town is split into 2 distinct areas that you can easier walk around/ between:
Intrerlaken Ost (more upmarket and quieter, with the big tourist hotels- near train station for Jungfraujoch and trains heading eastwards and ferries for Lake Brienz)
Intrertlaken West (more shops and livelier, has main railway station for travelling to/ from West parts of Switzerland and for ferries on Lake Thun).
Things to note, anywhere in Switzerland is ridiculously expensive to eat, drink, stay. The plugs are unique, 3 pin and completely different from the UK and rest of Europe, you will need a special adaptor for Swiss sockets.
Try Swiss wines, they are great- buy them in local supermarkets (Denners was very good or Coop) for about 10 CHF a bottle- same wine will cost about 65 CHF in restaurant!
Uninspiring and heavy food, with cheese in 80% dishes.

A little gem of a hotel. Excellent location, free parking nearby. Staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Good breakfast, fabulous coffee. Very modern rooms with good shower and water pressure, comfortable beds.
Especially loved the facility of the guest lounge which we took advantage of most nights. Eating out is expensive in Switzerland so great to be able to obtain a take away from the CoOp and heat up in the microwave.
Great breakfast with freshly cooked eggs. Good selection. Nice common room always available tea and coffee. Excellent location. Overall the hotel had everything you could need for a comfortable stay. Hotel is a bit dated but you its clean and you get everything you need. Important to realise for Switzerland this is par for average so it is not fair to be expecting 5-star modern accommodations at this price.
Great location near Interlaken Ost train station. The hotel is basic but has everything needed. The rooms are comfortable with views across the river. Great value and the rate included continental breakfast.
Friendly staffs, good location there's a bus stop in front of the hotel, great service, love the view from the balcony. Nothing to complain. We have made good memories here in Switzerland. Thank you!
Location is superb, near Train station of Interlaken West, Supermarket, Shops are all within walking distance. For Muslim travellers, there are 1 Halal food which sells Kebab, etc.
