A Revivalist Triumph
The capital of Lower Saxony, beautiful Hanover has been so thoughtfully planned that you can’t tell it was largely destroyed in World War II. The city is full of green spaces, one of which is by huge Maschsee lake where sailors and rowers share the waters with pedaloes. In winter you may be able to skate there. A smaller lake in the Maschpark closer to the centre reflects the grand New Town Hall overlooking it.
The Old Town Hall is in the Old Town where half-timbered buildings were brought from all areas of the city during rebuilding. The square behind hosts one of the Hanover Christmas markets. The others are on Kröpcke pedestrian shopping street, and in front of the station, where the city’s main shopping centre - Ernst August Gallerie – is located.
To the north are the incredible, landscaped Herrenhausen Gardens – awash with colour for much of the year. This area gives its name to the local pilsener – Herrenhäuser. Also here are colourful sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle, whose work is also displayed in the Sprengel modern art museum.

Hannover was a pleasant city where we were able to walk around quite easily to visit many places of interest. The red route guide from the tourist information office (just across a small road from the Grand Hotel Mussmann) was excellent as it gave a walkable route around the city and also gave lots of useful information about the various sights. Our main reason for visiting Hannover was to see the Christmas Markets - which were all excellent and easily walkable from our hotel. The Christmas markets are the best we've experienced in all of Germany (and we've been to quite some cities in Germany). Like the rest of Germany, all the shops are closed om Sunday, but the stores in the central train station (Hanover HBF) are open and especially the bakery there is great.

We walked to town via a tunnel under the train tracks or the central station. We eat at Block House. The price is a little high but the quality of the food is fantastic. We stayed near the train station. Parking is only 6 euro per day. We wanted to have a little more time.

We visited the city of Hanover to see ACDC in August 2024. We have previously lived in nearby Celle and have visited Hanover previously and know it very well. A great vibrant city with plenty of eating and drinking establishments. Great City, lots to do and see especially if you can find time to explore the outer districts such as Celle, Bergen/Belsen for example. Celle has a great steak restaurant called the Indian Steak House. Fantastic food situated right the heart of the town center.BM5755United Kingdom
