Hard to give a fair review as it was off season and I was there for a very short time.
However, I did not find the people of Marseille to be very friendly, in particular, the staff in many restaurants were quite brusque which was surprising as you'd think they would welcome the business in the off season. Once I got out of Marseille the french were lovely but Marseille itself not so much. Shame, as it reinforced the reputation of the french being standoffish.
Having said that it was easy to get around Marseille and I did have some very good meals.

The afternoon was spent at Fort-St.Jean and the Mucem museum which were fascinating with great views of the harbour.
The adjacent Cosquer Méditerranée exhibition of a nearby undersea cave system with prehistoric remains also looks interesting.
A No.60 bus runs from there and the port up to Basilica of Notre-Dame-of-la-Garde. On the day of the visit the sky was blue with clear views for miles, and the sunset was a treat.

Marseille is a vibrant, multicultural city that is enjoying a 'hip' moment. Despite its rough and tumble reputation people are friendly and helpful. Marseille doesn't have the elegance of Paris, but is much cooler (and far less expensive). I love the area between Marché de la Plaine and Cours Julien, so full of cafes, bars, boutiques (and maybe the best vintage stores in Europe). The city offers a wonderful array of food from Provencal to North and West African to Asian...Couscous and Tajine are a must! And, of course you can go to the beach...Plage des Catalans is a 20 min walk from the city center!

We spent 3 nights in Marseille in early November.
We spent 3 nights in Marseille in early November. The weather was beautiful, with ‘everyone’ out on the beach or at the restaurants and bars near the port area, or touring the various sites in Marseille. We were sad to leave the beautiful weather and the very friendly and lively atmosphere.

Location is very good , the hotel very close to Marseilles Saint Charles train station , around 5-8 minutes to walk , easy to get train to visit towns ouside Marseilles. My apartment has small kitchen so it was convenient for me to cook by myself , there are all necessary kitchen utilities for cooking. The hotel is in within walking distance to city centre and old port - 1 km
This apartment is so beautiful, so comfortable and so tastefully decorated that you may struggle to leave it to see the sights of Marseille! The location is perfect - just a couple of minutes' walk to the lively Vieux Port and very convenient for exploring the city on foot. This is my second time staying here and I will definitely be back.
Our room (suite - it included an extra single bedroom which was really useful for reorganising the contents of our suitcases) had a balcony and wonderful views across Marseilles Vieux Port. The hotel was in an excellent location for bars and restaurants overlooking the water too.
The hotel is centrally located, just at the centre of Marseille Vieux Port.
Very beautifully decorated.
The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. Especially Cloe is one of a kind.
Modern, clean hotel. Pleasant welcome. Spacious, well-equipped room. Within walking distance of various places of interest such as Le Panier, Le Vieux Port... I recommend :)
