My husband is a great fan of tsipouro (Greek drink like raki) and Volos is know for its tsipouradika (small plates-meze) with tsipouro, which you can order with or without anise) That's why we made the long and windy journey, to tick it off his bucket list.
We were expecting to find loads of such places but they proved harder to find than we imagined.
Our first find was MEZEN - great place, lovely meze, which is fish based, although we were asked if we had any allergies before he brought them out. Love it there, and equally loved Kritamo lots of tasty mezedes.
Enjoyed a trip up Pilio until we bumped into a bus load of people we know from our hometown! Nice mountain villages but very popular/busy.
We did a lot of walking as we stayed in the old part of Volos, I wouldn't recommend going there as it's very rundown, maybe it looks better in the sunshine, we stayed in Volos on cloudy days.

Nice city with a pretty seaside, with vibes of Thessaloniki. The "tsipouradika" are a thing to try out for the local night life, if you're into hitting the booze a bit. The seafood was pretty neat overall. Didn't have the chance to visit the surrounding region, but I've heard wonders and will have to check it out some day.

Volos is okay.
Volos is okay. We were transiting for one night (going between Skopelos and Thessaloniki) and it was great for that. The pavement surfaces for the walk from Volos town to the main bus station are in part a bit rough. The Tourist Information office is near the main bus station but it is not possible to see any indication of it from the bus station, so we missed it entirely until - too late - our return to the bus station.

Volos is a much more calm and laid back town than Athens or Thessaloniki. It's also noticeably cleaner and safer. There aren't that many tourists around and it seemed like most of them were Greeks on holidays. There's not much to see in terms of historical monuments, unless you go up the Pelion Mountain to Makrinitsa or to the western outskirts where archeological sites are located. I would say that car is a must for both of those places. In the center there's a very nice seaside promenade, archeological museum, three beautiful churches of Agios Nikolaos, Metamorphosis and Agios Konstantinos. The latter located on the shoreside has some neo-byzantine mosaics inside which are worth seeing. If you're interested in the byzantine era, you can see some fragments of the walls near the train station where the medieval city was located. Nothing spectacular though. Volos has quite a lot of walkable streets with car traffic restrictions which allows for relaxed walks. Don't be intimidated by narrow backstreets. You can find some of the best bars around there.

Volosz is an interesting town with several sights to see both in town and in the surroundings. You can taste the way of Greek life there. People are kind and easy going. There are plenty of good restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy nice Greek food. In the surroundings you can find wonderful beaches and seashores as well as nice mounten villages(Makrenica). You can organize a complex vacation if you go there: hiking, paddling (Damukari Shakayak is just perfect) , just enjoying the beaches and sunbathing; cultural activities in the museums and archeological sites (eg Dimini).

Volos is one of the most amazing cities in Greece with close proximity to both beautiful mountains and villages and the lovely islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos. The region is still recovering from the catastrophic floods of 2023... so for now its mostly the mountains around Pylion that are most attractive.

I was absolutely thrilled to be given a very quiet room on the port-facing side of the hotel, away from the Main Street Iasonas. I had asked for a quiet room and the hotel staff provided me with accommodation that more than exceeded my expectations. The room was very clean and exceptionally comfortable with a balcony to enjoy the port view. I felt entirely rested and restored after my night at this wonderful hotel right in the heart of Vólos. Thank you Aegli.
The room was clean, hotel staff is very kind and the location is just in the city center and a short walk to the port with seaside promenade. The room had TV, AC, small fridge, tiny private bathroom, some furniture and a balcony. It was kind of an emergency booking and we were satisfied with our stay. Volos is a safe, clean and rather calm city compared to Athens or Thessaloniki and we really enjoyed it.
Great little hotel with an excellent staff just a few steps from a beautiful sandy beach with lots of bars and restaurants and about 5 minutes drive to downtown Volos. Very clean and big room with a fridge and a coffee maker. Breakfast was great, lots of choices for everyone`s taste. Big free parking just outside the hotel gate
