The arrival point of low-cost airlines and cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.
One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its pavement cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The next door Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.
Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by funicular railway.
A funicular also descends to the modern town – Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, and opposite is the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC play in a stadium to the north-east, while south-west is the train station from where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.
Booking.com offers several Bergamo hotels near the airport and the neighbouring Orio Centre shopping complex.

Bergamo was full of history with great restaurants and beautiful scenery. There is nothing I didn’t like about it and I will return soon.
Favourite place - the old town where we are authentic pasta dishes for €14 with a drink.
We walked up to the old town and admired the views but you can go on the tram or Tuk tuk if you can’t walk far.
There’s some beautiful churches and museums to see.

Easy to get to and we stayed in the upper part.
Easy to get to and we stayed in the upper part. Very historic and scenic. Buses and trains were cheap and made getting around easy as they were very frequent. Old town, funicular, bus then train to Milan. Total time less than 2 hours.

Bergamo is stunning, especially Citta Alta. It is so close to the airport and is an ideal base for travelling around the area by train. We have visited Verona, Milan, Lake Como, Lake Garda and Lake Lugano in Switzerland whilst staying in Bergamo.

We travelled to Bergamo to attend the football match between Atalanta and Napoli. It was really good. Cafe Poeme was really nice and Casa Marta was really close to the Citta Alta and the Gewiss Stadium.

Citta Alta is beautiful as well as citta bassa.
Citta Alta is beautiful as well as citta bassa. I didn’t expect bergamo to be so interesting. Food is very good as well as shopping. Do not miss Citta Alta 😍. We walked everywhere. We only used the funicular to go up citta alta and a bus to get from airport. Make sure you go up the castle when in Citta Alta as you get the most beautiful eye bird view of Bergamo. Don’t miss out on walking to one of the 4 Portas of Citta Alta. And if you want to try some delicious desserts go to Da Vittorio in Citta Alta, not cheap but delicious.

A gem of a medieval citadel.
A gem of a medieval citadel. Among its highlights, just in the Città Alta: Il Palazzo della Ragione (The 'Palace of Reason' now how's that for an aptly named place?!), the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colleoni Chapel, and the octogonal-shaped Battistero to name but a few.

The true old style Italy in your room.the room was large and spacious the place is full of antiques far nicer than a new plain hotel or b&b with all you need for a stay down to a kettle and a mini fridge.the bathroom was fine a big shower a featurestone wall.heating an air con available too.the premises was just off a cobble stone street.
The team contact you with all the details to access the room and are only a phonecall away should you need any assistance. They even arranged an early morning taxi to the airport for us.
The host, Gita, is more than friendly, she gave us a crash course on Bergamo, public transport, apps to use to navigate through Italy, places to eat and was available non stop for any possible question, a huge shout out to her.
The bathroom is very nice and the apartment was relly well equipped.
The apartment is spacious and the location is in the old town so its great for sight seeing.
There is a self check in and check out option which is always a plus.
Lovely hotel, friendly staff. It's near a bus stop which includes the 1A to take you up to Cite Alta(Bergamo Old Town).) Great breakfast choice and there's a terrace restaurant with great views of Cite Alta. Beautiful food but not cheap. The bus stop for the airport is across the street (1 aeroporto).
A great place to stay in Bergamo with friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is located very near to Porta Nuova with a 15 - 20 minute walk to Citta Alta. The room was very clean, cosy and comfortable. The breakfasts were nice, varied and tasty. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone!
It was very rustic and romantic - somewhere that really felt authentically old Bergamo.
Breakfast was outstanding - one of the best meals we had in Italy - £5!
Communication with the owner was excellent - Erica is the perfect host.
