We did not have any preconceptions of Wellington but did think it might be like Canberra, where we live near, with it being a capital city. Wellington is much nicer than Canberra and everything was so easy to walk to. It's such a great little city that I would love to return to some day.

The Wellington Cable car was nearby and clearly signposted.
The Wellington Cable car was nearby and clearly signposted. A great ride and fantastic views at the top. We were a little disappointed that we could not buy the Senior tickets , even though we are clearly of age and had ID to confirm senior status. Apparently we needed to be Kiwi Seniors.
Harbour and waterfront was fascinating and we were a short distance from the Beehive and Museums.

Plenty to see and do. Cable car to Botanic Gardens walks was fun. Typically windy and often four seasons in one day. Our morning was warm but the wind turned fierce and squally from the South by Noon.

Booked shuttle bus online as was arriving very late at night only to find I could have paid far less for two with same company. Bit annoyed at that however driver was good and delivered us to our hotel in a timely manner.
Wellington is a great city with lots to do and see. Te Papa is a highlight as is the cable car/ views spectacular.
Make sure you bring some seriously warm clothes as it can be very breezy. Coffee can be a bit hit and miss as it tastes quite bitter compared to Australia. Generally people are friendly and often quite kind. Great book shops and The old bank arcade is great and watch for the clock on the hour it drops down and opens up.
Eating=Squirrel ahh the cream buns, really good coffee and Small Acorns nxt door for great homewares and gifts including for the little people in your life.Bring are good pair of walking shoes and use your legs and if you’re really fit climb the Plimmer Steps! Botanic gardens are lovely!

My favorite city. So much to do and so diverse, culturally.
My favorite city. So much to do and so diverse, culturally. The people are friendly and there is so much to do. The restaurants are fantastic and there are so many to choose from. It is hard to pick a good one. It is easy to walk around Wellington, if you are staying in Oriental Bay the walk to Courtneay Pl is 5mins. Te Papa is right there and the wharf not too far away. I love Wellington.

Overall the Shepards Arms Hotel was excellent. Location was excellent, centrally located, easy access to the motorway, public transport and all the other Wellington hotspots. Staff are super friendly and really accommodating. The food on offer is yummy too. For an establishment close to the CBD another bonus is that there is free parking onsite but it does pay to arrive early or you may miss out. Highly recommend to other travellers, this is very good value for money.
We liked that the room was fully self-contained and clean, with nothing chipped, worn or threadbare. The central location offered a great starting point to explore Wellington City. Check-in and check-out was seamless and late check-out was greatly appreciated.
Beautiful old building in the heart of Wellington City - super easy to locate handy to Waterfront/TSB Arena & city shops. Great hotel with old world charm! Room was lovely & spacious with kitchenette, big bathroom & laundry area. Will def book again.
The hotel is part of the Wellington airport - great from transit stops in Wellington. Front counter staff most accommodating and provided options to get into the city etc
