Yamashiroya Ryokan ligt in een historische en rustige stad met warmwaterbron en beschikt over ruime hete baden en comfortabele kamers in Japanse stijl. This was one of 4 ryokan that we stayed in during our tour of Kyushu. It was the cheapest and the most informal. It is also a little off the beaten track, but you can get picked up and dropped off at the local station. It has the feel of a mountain cabin, with old furniture and decor. It is, however, wonderfully homely and the owners are just the loveliest people. It also has 4 family onsen, that you can lock for privacy. The food is excellent, and there is a lot of it. The current owner is the third generation, and speaks excellent English.

Yunohira Kamiyanagiya is gunstig gelegen in de wijk Yunohira Onsen in Yufu, en bevindt zich op 16 km van Kinrinko Meer, 33 km van station Oita en 37 km van station Beppu. We loved the atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff, the food and loved the choices of baths. We were greeted enthusiastically and shown to our room after a brief explanation of the layout and other details. It was a cute traditional style room with a little sit-down area as well as a private toilet. There is a shower in each bath, with shampoo/conditioner/body wash. It was lovely, we tried one of the larger ones at first. Tons of room and and the water was just the right heat. We tried 2 other ones during our stay and even the smaller one hd lots of space. It was also the hottest lol The food was exceptional, both dinner and breakfast. There was so much that we couldn't even finish it all but we strived to try it all at least. The fish for dinner may have been the best cooked fish I ever had. Everything was fresh and beautiful, even the plates were a feast for the eyes. The beds were futons on the floor and more comfortable than some I've slept on this trip. I would highly recommend staying here as it was an amazing peaceful break in the middle of our trip to Japan. We rented a car and even just the drive up into the mountains was spectacular.
