Wonderful stay with a truly unique experience. The host was lovely and warm, and a professional folk dancer/singer. She gave us a performance which was a highlight of our time in Japan. She also has the most adorable dog, Chiro, who made us laugh and smile.

Hamabeno Ryouriyado Houraikan provides a hot tub and a public bath, as well as air-conditioned accommodation in Kamaishi, 1.3 km from Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium. Houraikan will always have a very special place in my heart because of the proprietress Akiko-san and her team. I was touched by their story of how they overcame the tsunami, and by their genuine warmth and kindness. Having been to many ryokans, I am familiar with the high standards of service but Houraikan went above and beyond. Their greetings and smiles are more than politeness but genuine warmth and earnestness, which you can feel. Akiko-san went out of her way to take photos for me as I was a solo traveller. She also brought me around Kamaishi, proudly introducing attractions along the way, giving me recommendations and even accompanying me to the tourist centre to get a town map, and then to the museum where she asked that the museum staff take good care of me. When a fire alarm rang in the middle of the night on one night, Akiko-san was so apologetic for disturbing my rest and even though I reassured her that it was alright, she waived the cost of my sake and the usual bath tax as a sincere apology. She also gave me extra snacks and a bandana as a farewell gift. All the staff at Houraikan are warm, friendly and very thoughtful. For example, once I wanted to use the washing machine but it was being used. One of the staff later went out of his way to knock on my room door to let me know that the washing machine had become available for my use. Furthermore, it was lovely to bathe in the lovely open-air wood bath with such a pleasant smell and to soak in the onsen water while listening to the sound of the majestic ocean as it is so close to the shore. The futon is also something special - they have got the most comfy blanket, futon and pillow. I pray for more people to discover the beauty of Houraikan - it is not just the surrounding ocean that is beautiful, it is more than anything the heart of the people at Houraikan that makes it special!

Boasting natural hot spring baths, Hohoemino Kuyufu Tsuruya is located a 15-minute walk from JR Tendo Station, 50 km from Sendai. Everything, from the food to the room. I booked the smallest room which I did not know that there is a private onsen. My meals were in a separated room which I feel is better than having inside my own room. This hotel is worth staying for the experience. There are guests around but I was surprised to not hear any noises. I felt like I was being served as a royalty. The sake that I had, does not have any alcohol smell, it tasted so good and it had a cherry taste to it. I enjoyed the private outdoor onsen and I regretted not trying the public onsen. Also, breakfast usually starts at 730am but I had a train to catch, the hotel offered to serve breakfast at 7am. I was already awake at 5am to enjoy the onsen for the last time. My dinner was at 6pm which was the earliest timing.

Located right in front of Matsushima Bay, Komatsukan Kofu-tei offers accommodations with free wired internet access. Phenomenal stay! The staff was so friendly and professional. The views are one of the best I’ve ever seen! The onsen views are breathtaking. We also booked the private bath and it was perfect! We only had traditional breakfast and it was divine. We loved every minute of our stay here! We’ll definitely be back! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

Located just 4.5 km from Sendai City Community Support Center, Sendai Guest House UMEBACHI provides accommodation in Sendai with access to a terrace, a shared lounge, as well as luggage storage space.... Dette var et hjemmekoselig hostell litt utenfor sentrum. Personalet var veldig hyggelig. Engelskkunnskapene var varierende, men de greide å få frem poengene de ønsket. De var svært inkluderende og ga noen få tips til hva man kunne se og gjøre utenfor Sendai. Frokosten besto av loff med syltetøy, og den ene dagen hadde de til og med laget zundapålegg (en type grønne bønner som knuses)! Beliggenheten var et lite stykke utenfor sentrum, men det var ganske kort vei å gå til toget som gikk direkte til Sendai stasjon. Inngangsdøren hadde kodelås, så man kunne enkelt komme og gå slik man selv ønsket. Personalet var også tilstede mye av dagen. Til prisen jeg betalte var fasilitetene bra, men ikke forvent et nyoppusset og høyteknologisk hostell. Det var også kiosk rett i nærheten av hostellet.

Staff is very friendly, even if not everyone speaks English, they try to help as much as they can. Great views of the city and bridge

Located in Oga and only 400 metres from Kitaura Harbor, 農家民宿 里山のカフェ ににぎ provides accommodation with garden views, free WiFi and free private parking. Beautiful host sharing his warm and comfortable home. Such an authentic experience with delicious local produce for breakfast. Fabulous

白神山地の麓でヤギのいるゲストハウス あわじ商店 is a recently renovated apartment in Fujisato, where guests can make the most of its garden and shared lounge. The room was nice and bed was comfy. House is big and clean. Host is very welcoming. Washing machine and dryer are very easy to use. Need to bring your own towels. We forgot. They also have goats and chickens, kids loved it!
