Walk or drive to Nelson Bay Beach or Dutchmans Beach, two of the most beautiful beaches in the bay, or drive 10 minutes to stunning surf beaches. Golf courses are a few minutes away, and the Port Stephens Peninsula is bike friendly. Climb to the top of Tomaree to see the sunrise, then enjoy the rest of the day relaxing at the beach, playing golf, or just chilling at the many local cafes. Kookaburra Retreat is an easy 3 hours drive from Sydney (by freeway most of the way), 50mins from Newcastle and 30mins drive from Newcastle airport, and there is a Port Stephens coach from the airport into Nelson Bay CBD. Nelson Bay offers many beach & bush walking routes, and the peninsula is bicycle friendly with lots of bike lanes and mountain bike tracks for the keen cyclers.
