Hotel Ichinose was in the middle of the village near the ski slope and bus stop which was great to go to the snow monkeys etc. The staff were always very helpful. The tatami room was a very good size. You could rent ski gear there.

We liked the onsen baths, nice Japanese buffet breakfast with western (cereal, toast, and pastry) options, location 2 minutes walk to chairlifts, and Teppa Room! We also enjoyed the kaiseki dinner for my husband's birthday. Ichinose is a good area to stay if you want to try dinners at restaurants outside of your hotel.

Great location, excellent staff.
We thought we would eat out in the evenings, but there are’’t many restaurants near by, so we booked dinner each night (and had breakfast included), the food was great with Japanese style, loads of options for us and the kids.
Super fun, welcoming and easy place to stay.

Location very good right next to the ski fields. The tatami rooms were well maintained and comfortable. The staff were very polite and friendly. The front desk manager was so helpful and very friendly, helping us out with dinner options, even giving my son a chocolate when he wasn’t feeling very well. Very helpful staff.

Jigokudani Monkey Park
Animal enthusiasts can’t miss this park. Set in a valley, it’s home to a group of beautiful snow monkeys. On the way in, you’ll pass a few as they sit in the trees - and once you get to the hot springs, you’ll see why Jigokudani’s so popular with visitors and locals. Here, red-faced monkeys bathe in the warm water, Zen expressions across their faces.

It was OK - depends on how much experience you have with wild life in other parts of the world. The walk is about 40 minutes each way. The monkeys completely ignore the gawping humans, which is great. Unique experience but getting there and back using public transport was challenging

If you are going in winter wear some proper shoes as it is icy, muddy and wet. Try to go in the first half of the day as you see the monkeys chilling out before the staff start to feed and interact with them.

Very cool traditional tatami room with a great view.
Onsen facilities were very nice and always accessible.
Staff were very helpful, offering complimentary bus rides to the local Jigokudani Monkey Park, as well as to the train station on the day of our departure.
Early July, we were the only travellers so we had the onsen to ourselves. There was male, female and private onsen available. There was excellent service, and they welcomed our young toddlers. We got driven to the Jigokudani Monkey Park and picked up by Yumoto-san. Yumoto-san and his wife also helped style our family in yukata for photos.
We specifically choose this hotel to visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park. For this visit, it was the ideal location! Right in front of the hotel was a bus stop that went to the park. The hotel itself doesn't offer breakfast, but they work together with a hotel nearby for a traditional Japanese breakfast which was a really nice experience for a good price! You also had the possibility to reserve a private indoor onsen, which was a fun experience. They also provided yukata's that you could wear in the room and when going to the onsen.
- Super friendly, attentive, and helpful staff despite language barrier
- Very comfortable beds and quiet rooms
- Clean and well-managed onsen for hotel guests. Yukata also provided
- Great location to Jigokudani Monkey Park, and other onsens.
The guesthouse is lovely and although the hosts don't speak English, they have answers already written out for most of the questions you need. They picked me up from the Yudanaka station and then drove me to the Jigokudani monkey park entrance the next morning. I also did the dinner and breakfast and it was a highlight of the stay. The onsen on the property is great and I liked the yukata they provided. It's about a 10-15 min walk down to Shibu Onsen if you want to walk around and get some drinks or food.
Very friendly and accommodating owners. Especially grateful that they cater to non-meat eaters. Two private onsens; one with very hot water, one more spacious and beginner friendly. Highly recommended for those who are travelling to see Jigokudani monkey park or those looking for an intimate, traditional-feeling ryokan.
