Haikou is an old city with about 1 million population ( according to our driver). Not very touristic place, mostly local tourists and those coming from SEA to visit their ancestral homes. The traffic is chaotic.. imagine Ho Chih Min city.. with many electric bikers moving in all direction. The Mission Hill Movie Town is interesting, if you like everything oldies. The newly open Nanyang Street in Mission Hill Movie Town is worth a go. WuGong Temple can give it a miss! Didn't enjoy the local food there, it's just very different from where I come from. For those thinking of Hainan, it's recommended to stay a night or 2 in Sanya as the city is very different from Haikou, cleaner, fresher air and a much resort feel but it's costlier than Haikou. There is a Sanya Club Med there too. Nanshan Cultural Centre on Sanya island is nice, do allocate at least 2-3 hours to explore the place. Didn't get to the Kuan Yin island as we were short of time. Vegetarian lunch was so so, probably because our local travel agent didn't choose a good one for us. For those with young children or elderly, it's recommended to hire a private golf cart to move around, it costs CNY600-800. otherwise there are tram buses you can hop on at different stations and attraction. The high speed rail is fast & efficient, can't say much about the commuters though.

Surprise that the Western Coast of Hainan is developing very fast. Lots of new building all over the place. We enjoy the variety of fruits available all over the Donfang.

Don't use Sanya bay you can have health issues (red dots around your body), rather Yalong bay or Dalong bay. In general Sanya is pretty cool place and Hainan has many things to offer. Definitely worth it.

China's best tropical getaway ! Beaches were splendidly well-maintained , neat and safe . Good weather , the sun was just about right and the breeze over there is relaxing as well . Dadonghai beach is a must visit , i didn't go to any other beach after heading to Sanya , this one was just perfect . Get involved in over the sea activities and try parasailing & jet-ski riding . Hainan Chicken is a local delicacy , and the seafood is marvellous . You must try both and return home satisfied

You have to found out what you like. It is great for seafood. Hainan chicken if you like. The meat is like rubber also the expensive australian black angus Steaks. The beach near the Airport are the best.

The villas are lovely and well designed. The hotel main lobby, pool and restaurants building are nice too. We ate the hotel restaurant, prices are not to bad and you can get a taste of local Hainanese dishes in the Chinese restaurant. Western choices are somewhat limited to Pasta. South East Asian dishes are also available. Hotel provides free transport to and from various places - Sanya Phoenix Int'l airport, Lingshui High Speed Rail Station (for those from Sanya city or Haikou), Haitang Bay Shopping Mall and the Westin and Sanya City. Not so much to do at Lingshui Township however. The hotel offers different activities for each day of the week - Karaoke, crab hunting, bicycle ride and so forth.

Haikou is a beautiful city on a beautiful island. The temperature of 20 degrees or higher during the day is a relief in winter. The seaside air makes it very pleasant compared to other parts of China (we live in Shanghai). Inland Hainan has an abundance of green and with the high speed train you are within 2 or 3 hours on the other side of the island.

Stunning area. Very green and lovely beaches. Very cheap compared to UK prices. Lots of development still going on and you can see they are making huge efforts to make the area tourist friendly. Some stunning hotels stayed in Yalong bay and Sanya Bay We luckily had a Chinese speaker with us, but if you have not would be more difficult, so would definitely pre book transfers and use concierge in hotel to book trips, etc. Very good train service if you want to travel further afield in Hainan

I don't really like Sanya. The place is still developing and is a Mekka for guys who live on Hainan, including foreigners. Life there is easy and chilly. But it's boring. The only advantage is going for beaches outside, but for that you have Vietnam, Cambodia. No need to go to Sanya, if you can go to these two countries, that will guarantee you better vacation.
