Mandarmoni is quite near from Kolkata (Calcutta) in West Bengal. The nearest train station is Kanthi PH. From Howrah, it takes around 4hours to reach Kanthi PH by train. From Kanthi PH station, one can take a cab (Rs. 400/- for a Maruti Omni Van) to reach your hotel on the beach in Mandarmoni. You can also reach Kanthi Bus Stand and board a bus that goes to Digha (it will be cheaper this way) Mandarmoni is a quite beach. No night life or entertainments on the beach. Very few shops. It is better if you buy your stuff on your way from Kanthi or Kolkata. Food is very expensive here. Alcohols are charged 30 - 40% extra if you buy from the beach. The beach has both high & low tides everyday. The water is ok for bathing, but the sand is too harsh. Swimming and water sports are not advisable on this beach. Mandarmoni, as it seemed to us, is good for 2-3 days maximum. Good place to hang out with friends or family. Unlike Digha, Mandarmoni is quite secluded and clean. Less but quality crowd. Best time to visit is winters as the weather becomes too hot in summers. Nearby places of visits are few temples, Talsari beach and Digha. Hotel Mainak is a very good place for stay. Right on the beach, safe and budget-friendly. The owner is very helpful too.

After visiting Sikkim which is a civic state with people serious to make it look more beautiful then you come to the neighbouring state of West Bengal and see the vast difference. Main kalimpong is a crowded city and much polluted these days as construction works going on. Due to hillside narrow roads there is traffic jam normally.

The hotel is very well situated, only 20min walk to the airport/5min by taxi. Its likely the best hotel close to the airport, good price for value for foreigners especially. The room/bathroom were very clean. Not much to do around but its perfect for overnight stay between flights. The restaurant had also a large menu and we could find vegan options (in menu and on request) for dinner and breakfast. We also had a special menu and a beautiful free cake for Valentine's Day. Staying at Windamere is an experience as it transports you into a different world. The location of the place is excellent where you are in midst of the mall road but away from its hustle bustle too. The property is uniquely designed and have retained the old world charm. The staff and food is personal and top notch. I would like to call out the staff as they went out of their way to make us feel at home. They type their own menu each day and it's something I would highly recommended one should not miss, both their breakfast and their dinner. The bar and the reading room are very regal so I enjoyed my drink as well.
