A quiet area in northern Thailand full of temples, statues and great natural landscapes makes this place worth coming to. The journey to get to Pai is a little tedious as their are over 700 sharp bends through the hills which takes hours but once you are there its lovely. Recommend hiring a scooter once in Pai as it is cheaper and more conveniant to get around in.
Northern Thailand food is really good and special. It's really good experience to meet Chiang Mai people there as they are very friendly. It's a good place to know about Thailand history and culture there.
Thailand is not just beaches- it’s a lot more. Go to Northern Thailand and see the temples, waterfalls , hiking trails, elephants, canyons and more
Chiang Mai is a great launch point for exploring the hidden treasures of Northern Thailand. I’ve enjoyed trekking near the border of Burma, I’ve rented a motorcycle and cruised the 600+ switchbacks out to Pai, I’ve explored jungle rope courses with the gibbons, and I’ve visited grand old temples in the surrounding mountains. That said, the city itself has so much to offer. Aside from boasting some of the best markets in Thailand (and that’s saying a lot), Chiang Mai is beautiful and easy to navigate for tourists. You want to find a good vegetarian restaurant? They’ve got it (Aum Cafe). You want a live rock band? They have that too. Just about anything you desire, they have it. All you have to do is seek and you shall find whatever your heart desires. After all of this, I leave you with only one piece of advice when visiting Chiang Mai; eat Khao Soi!! It is the North’s specialty dish, and its delicious. You won’t find it elsewhere in Thailand.
I love Pai. It’s an artsy village nestled in the valley with lots of good food and shops. The vibe in Pai is very mellow and calming. Definitely the highlight of our stay in northern Thailand.
It is a wonderful little city in Northern Thailand full of things to see and do. Chiang Mai is probably my favourite city in Thailand so far. If you ever consider going to Thailand and want to see lots of temples, then put this city on your map. The temples are particularly beautiful, and there are so many of them scattered across the city that you would need several days to visit them all. Chiang Mai is much quieter, cooler and calmer than the cities in the south. You can find plenty of cheap spots to grab a bite, but the quality of meals does not suffer from the low prices. My personal advice to any traveler on a budget is to eat at places where the locals eat. It is cheap and very authentic. Do not be afraid to haggle with the taxi drivers, as they might rip you off, especially if you look somewhat wealthy. Always have something to drink and cover your head, if you are traveling during the hot seasons.
Chiang Mai is still, even though there are already a lot of tourist, the classical Thailand, northern Thailand. Weather is better and more confortable than the places in the south, people are niceeee and softer and the cuisine, Thai massage and wonderful landscapes, make Chiand Mai and the north of Thailand a mandatory stop on the Journey. Going to a elephant reserve and expend at least 3 days with them is a must, night market street on sundays is a mush as well and to finish do not forget everyday full feet and body massage.
A hidden gem in Northern Thailand in the sense that not many tourists seem to visit here. But if you take your time and find a way to get yourself around, you really truly can immerse yourself in the Lanna culture. There is so much natural beauty, temples, waterfalls, mountains, and local cuisine to see and try here. Don't give it a miss just because it's unheard of!
THAILAND TRAVEL CHIANG RAI TRAVEL GUIDE AND SAMPLE ITINERARY Posted on October 29, 2016 chiang rai travel guide itinerary white temple Located in the northernmost mountainous region of Thailand, Chiang Rai is usually known to backpackers of the Banana Pancake Trail as the jump-off point for the Golden Triangle. For many travelers, it is still unknown. If you’re going to Chiang Mai though, I highly encourage you not to skip Chiang Rai and the other northern Thailand provinces. Here’s my Chiang Rai travel guide and sample itinerary during my 2 days in the province last year. The ancient city was founded by King Mengrai in the 13th century as the second capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Nowadays, Chiang Rai is inhabited by a diverse population of city dwellers, hill tribes and migrants from nearby Myanmar and China resulting in a mishmash of cultures, traditions, and way of life. The province’s highlight is its proximity to the borders of Myanmar and Laos as well as the access to the mountains in the west and the Mekong River. The more relaxed atmosphere in Chiang Rai is why some travelers label it as a sleepy town. There is hardly nightlife here and if there is, it no way compares to Chiang Mai or Bangkok.
The first great thing about a trip to Chiang Dao is the drive from Chiang Mai. The town itself is typical of Northern Thailand. There aren't a lot of options for dinning and drinks but you'll find plenty of local places. The people are friendly and helpful. Our highlight was Chiang Dao Cave, which is one of the best I've seen in Southeast Asia.
This must be one of the best places we've stayed at during our tour around northern Thailand. Ideally placed as a stopover if you're driving the Mae Hong Son loop as we were. Da and her husband are the most lovely hosts who will make you feel very very welcome. Our bungalow was quite new , modern, well built with a good shower and very comfortable bed. The room was exceptionally clean and fresh. Dinner was fantastic , so tasty with lots and lots of vegetables and very reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend a stay here.
My room in Antique Hotel Nan is bare bones basic, but it has some amenities to keep me comfortable, eg fridge, water heater, air con. On the morning when I was supposed to take the domestic flight back to Bangkok, I couldn’t get a Grab to the Nan airport. In my smattering of Thai when I tried to relate my predicament to my guesthouse staff, one of the staff members just went to her scooter, nodded at me and motioned for me to get on! She refused my payment when I offered. I am so touched by the Northern Thailand hospitality!
Phayao
Naga Tara was the best hotel experience we had on our journey through Northern Thailand. We spent two nights in the villa. The location and garden right on the shore of the lake is just lovely. The rooms are spacious and clean. The owner seems to look after the resort very well. The staff is exceptionally friendly. We had a wonderful breakfast. I travel a lot and never write recommendations, but this time I really wanted to.
Pai
The host was amazing, so kind and friendly. She gave us lots of advice on what to do while in Pai as well as around northern Thailand for our travels. The location is quiet and peaceful but also really close to the town centre. Though breakfast options were limited as two vegans she made sure we had enough food every morning. Balcony has a hammock. We enjoyed our stay so much we extended it by 2 days.
Mae Hong Son
Fern resort was a highlight of our trip to Northern Thailand. They offered a free shuttle bus into Mae Hong Song in the evening for a walk about and dinner in a village restaurant. The hike into the neighboring nature reserve was amazing. Well worth doing. The buffet breakfast was a treat. The only 10 I am giving of our 3 week trip to South East Asia.
Chiang Mai
The property is beautiful, traditional for Northern Thailand. Very relaxing ambiance. Great room, spacious and comfortable. Staff are wonderful, nothing too much trouble. Special mention for Yommi , who was amazing, she helped to make sure our son and daughter in law’s room was perfect. Thank you so much for your care and attention to details.
Pai
Location is a 5 minute stroll over a bamboo bridge into the walking street market. The owner is lovely, provided a modest breakfast and water dispenser throughout the day. Room was large, came with their own mosquito net, hammock, two outdoor chairs and bathroom with separated shower (a rarity in northern Thailand!).
Doi Saket
I loved the blend of Thai and japanese like style of the culture. Very peaceful and quiet environment with the utmost, professional, but kind and caring attitude and service from the owners that were so helpful in many ways. Simply an embodiment of a spirit of northern Thailand that treated me in a best possible way.
Really good family. More than a wonderful host. Great breakfast. Cute pets. The room is quite modern, but simple, and equipped with everything you would possibly need. I came for one night (exploring Northern Thailand) and it was the only place in which I extended my stay! Will definitely come back. Thank you 🙏
Pai
Probably one of the best hotels in Pai. Lovely quiet location with hill views and for some reason a kale farm in the garden. Have yet to find any privately owned high end establishments in northern Thailand which offer luxury in all areas, this place is no exception, but that’s not a reason not to stay.
Mae Hong Son
Staying at the Crossroads house and getting to know Pon over the bonfire and roasted sweet potatoes has been one of the highlights of my trip through northern Thailand. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful place to stay and kind people to share the experience with.
Pai
We stayed only for one night because we were traveling through northern Thailand by car. Hotel has good parking for cars. It's well kept inside and outside. Has shuttle to walking street and back to hotel, despite being only around 1 kilometer away. Staff is great.
Ban Non Na Yao
The hotels in this area are more expensive than in other zones in northern Thailand so finding a more budget friendly place was good. The room was better than the more expensive tents in the campsites around. The staff was really friendly and willing to help.
Lampang
What a sweet little spot on the river! Centrally located with adorable, comfortable rooms and beautiful grounds. The delightful breakfast was a huge bonus. Plus the cool vintage t-shirt shop in the front! Lampang is an absolute gem in Northern Thailand....
Pang Mapha
Cannot say enough how wonderful our stay with Philip and Gail was! The personal touch they provided made our honeymoon extra special, which I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a genuine stay in northern Thailand on the Mae Hong Song loop.
Chiang Dao
The location is great. Near national park/mountain. Very peaceful. Close to hot springs. Very attentive host. He organized a BBQ for is one night which was a great experience. One of hour highlights in Northern Thailand.
Ban Muang Pha
This is truly one of the nicest homestays in Northern Thailand. The atmosphere is amazing and the owner takes great care of everyone. It's a real family feeling and I would recommend to everyone to stay here.
This place is an absolute heaven and I cannot wait to visit again. I wish I could have extended my stay - Don't hesitate...Just book it and experience one of the best places to stay in Northern Thailand.
Lampang
This resort is ideal for a stop off when travelling through Northern Thailand. The setting among beautiful mature trees is full of character. Room and food simple but very pleasant and excellent value
Mae Hong Son
Like most of Northern Thailand, mattress was hard and uncomfortable. But the room was spacious, very clean and location is good. Guesthouse owner is friendly and helpful!
