In contrast to other manufacturers, Toyota is staying in the A-segment and has just revealed the Aygo X Prologue concept, a crossover that will replace its successful city car.

Previewing the current Aygo’s successor, which has been developed exclusively by Toyota, as Peugeot and Citroen will not offer replacements for the 108 and C1, it represents a big departure over the current model.

It has a raised ride height, big wheels wrapped in ‘Aygo X’ branded tires from Goodyear, muscular bodywork with flared arches, and wedged roofline. The current model’s X-shaped nose is gone, and instead, the front end has a much cleaner design, with a two-layer bonnet and C-shaped lighting units connected by a continuous LED strip. The bumper incorporates a much bigger lower grille, two side air vents and LED fog lights.

The back end looks more evolutionary, with the vertical taillights, joined together by another LED strip, positioned on each side of the wider tailgate. Some of the visual highlights of the study are the bicycle holder in the rear skid plate, the flush-mounted door handles and action cameras in the side mirror casings, used for “capturing and sharing special moments of exploration”, according to Toyota. For the time being, there are no images of the interior.

The production model will be built on the same platform as the latest Yaris. The GA-B architecture is compatible with different engines, and the crossover will reportedly launch with a small-capacity petrol engine in order to remain affordable.

Toyota did not say anything about the official unveiling date of its new small crossover yet. Nonetheless, it is understood that it premiere either towards the end of the year or in the first half of 2022.
