The longtime two-story Lincoln Park home of the late Joey Meyer, who was the head men’s basketball coach for DePaul University for 13 years, is headed for the wrecking ball, just weeks after Meyer’s family sold it to a homebuilder for $1.255 million.
Meyer played at DePaul for his father, Ray, and then was an assistant to his father for 11 seasons. When Ray Meyer stepped down after coaching DePaul for 42 years, Joey Meyer took over, guiding the Blue Demons to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first five seasons. Joey Meyer left DePaul in 1997 and later coached in the NBA’s developmental league and worked as a regional scout for the Los Angeles Clippers.
In Lincoln Park, Meyer and his wife, Barbara, had owned the home since buying it in the 1980s. Meyer died at the end of 2023 at age 74, and on Oct. 25, Meyer’s widow sold the house in an off-market deal to homebuilder EZMB LLC.
According to public records, the 2,435-square-foot house, which is on North Racine Avenue, has three bedrooms and 2 ½ bathrooms.
On Nov. 21, the Chicago Department of Buildings approved demolition of the former Meyer house. The home currently has demolition fencing around it.
Meyer’s son, Brian, did not respond to a request for comment.
The house had a $23,912 property tax bill in the 2023 tax year.
