How to Start a Career in BIM
Coordination (Navisworks, BIM 360 Glue)
Everyone starts somewhere. In construction, I find most people begin with MEP coordination in Navisworks. This requires ZERO modeling ability and more about working with modelers and superintendents. This isn’t easy to learn in school. If you have no construction experience, it will likely handicap you.
Modeling (Revit, Sketchup, AutoCAD 3D)
Revit is the tool of choice (in the US) for architects and designers. Its slowly becoming the tool of choice for Trade contractors. Learning Revit teaches you so much about databases, information, buildings, and design.
Revit is the authoring tool of almost all Architectural and Structural models out there today. In construction, if you know Revit, you can do estimating, create logistics plans, and be a much better coordinator.
AutoCAD 3D is the tool of choice for systems trades (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, etc.) Autodesk is pushing these companies to go to Revit. Once the transition is complete, Navisworks (and BIM 360 Glue) will be obsolete.
What we’re missing from Construction BIM models are the construction elements. Those who know Revit can fill that void. You can model in the cranes, buck hoists, platforms, safety railings, break-up pours, excavate topography, construction fences, temp roads, fall protection zones, etc.
4D Scheduling (Synchro, Fuzor)
Now we’re talking. Three different skill sets can be used in 4D; having all 3 is the holy grail:
- modeling construction elements (Revit, CAD, Sketchup)
- Scheduling (P6 anyone?)
- Linking models to schedules
