If you’re looking to upgrade your bedroom without replacing your mattress, there are plenty of budget-friendly ways to turn it into a sleep sanctuary. Thanks to last week’s big sales that kicked off the holiday season, there are some good discounts on everything from sheets and pillows to mattress toppers and air purifiers. As we move toward the end of November, expect these prices to remain low or even get better. Black Friday and Cyber Monday will be when we see the best prices and the most offers.

We keep tabs on everything we test in our labs and evaluate in our homes so that we can alert you when the good stuff goes on sale. And we do our best to give you insights into just how good the discounts really are as well. For instance, right now, the discounts available might not be the best you can get. If you need new sheets or pillows, you can find savings today. But if you can wait, you could save a few more bucks during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales next month.

    Duvets

    Buffy Cloud Comforter

Buffy’s Cloud Comforter is the softest choice in our at-home assessment. Thanks to its smooth, silky feel and fluffiness, the duvet is comfortable enough to use without a duvet cover. Made of recycled materials, it’s uniformly stuffed in layers to prevent clumping and shedding. The shell material is 100 percent sateen-weave Tencel lyocell.

    Brooklinen Down Comforter (Queen)

This duvet is now 15 percent off for first-time buyers. It was the top pick for luxury comforters. (Brooklinen also makes sheets that excel in CR’s tests and are also on sale; see below.) CR tried the down comforter, but Brooklinen also carries a down alternative option, and both are available in lightweight and ultrawarm versions. For those looking for a true down comforter that delivers on quality, warmth, and breathability, the Brooklinen is worth the splurge.

    Quince Premium Down Alternative Comforter

This all-season duvet is lightweight and breathable, making it a great choice for anyone who sleeps hot. And because it’s a down alternative made of microfiber, which is thinner and not as closely woven as polyester fibers, it’s more breathable than those with a fill made from polyester, a common material for down alternative duvets. Plus, if you’re not satisfied, Quince offers a 365-day return window.

    Pillows

The Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Loft Pillow is made of shredded memory foam and excels in our tests for support, no matter your size or sleep position. The Coop also keeps its shape well, showing little to no change in height or fluffiness in our resilience tests. Each pillow comes with extra foam, so you can adjust the filling to your liking. The only area where this pillow falls a bit short is in breathability—it sleeps slightly warm.

This StyleWell pillow, available exclusively at Home Depot, is a great option if you’re a fan of memory foam, especially at this low price. It gets top marks for side sleepers and aces our tests for breathability. The pillow also performs very well when it comes to how its firmness, height, and support change with use. If you’re a back sleeper, you may want to consider other options, however, because it gets middling scores for that type of sleeper.

Made of two layers of gel memory foam, Tempur-Pedic’s Tempur-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow is the most expensive pillow we’ve tested. It’s top notch when it comes to side-sleeper support but only middling for back-sleeper support. In our resilience test, this pillow successfully maintained its shape. Despite having “breeze” in its name, the pillow doesn’t allow for much airflow, so you may get sweaty sleeping on it. Only the cover is machine-washable.

This pair of microfiber pillows offers very good support for side sleepers but earns just middling scores in our back support tests. And resilience is just so-so. But if you sleep a bit warm, you can find comfort in knowing that these pillows have maximum breathability.

    Sheets

You’re going to experience quite a bit of wrinkling with these Casaluna cotton sheets, but if you don’t mind pulling out the steamer, you have a winner with this set. It provides a great fit for mattresses 14 inches thick and under, and it can withstand a considerable amount of stretching and pulling. It’s the only cotton sheet in our ratings to ace our strength test and one of just a few to excel in our shrinkage test. The fitted sheet includes directionals to indicate which ends go where.

This Brooklinen set is available for 15 percent off for first-time shoppers. It will fit a mattress up to 14 inches thick. Our testers note that these sheets don’t shrink as much as some other cotton sheets we tested. They earn above-average scores for both fit and shrinkage, which means that although they do tend to get smaller after washing, they don’t change all that much over time. Luxe Core sheets are on the softer side, based on our sensory test. Labels along each side that read “short side” and “long side” make clear which way to make a bed.

According to our sensory test, the Lands’ End Premium Supima Cotton Sheet Set is one of the softest in our ratings. Though you will experience some wrinkling, it still performs better than most natural cotton sheets in our wrinkling assessment. With an excellent fit for mattresses 14 inches thick and under, little to no shrinkage, and a very strong weave, it is a solid pick.

    Cooling and Weighted Blankets

    Elegear Revolutionary Cooling Blanket

The Elegear Revolutionary Cooling Blanket kept us the coolest in our tests and was comfortable, soft, and well made. It features smooth Arc-Chill 3.0 Cool Fabric on one side and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified cotton on the other side.

    Hush Iced Cooling Weighted Blanket

Because the Hush Iced blanket is also a weighted blanket, it was the least effective at cooling among the blankets we evaluated for that quality. But it was also much cooler than the other weighted blankets we’ve tried, keeping the evaluator comfortable in 75° F weather. It’s also soft, smooth, and cool to the touch, and you can choose a 15- or 20-pound blanket.

    Air Purifiers

The Blueair Blue Pure 211+, which was recently $30 less, takes up a little over a square foot of floor space and looks like it would be at home in an Ikea catalog. It aces our particle reduction tests on high and low speeds, meaning it quickly and effectively clears the air of both large (dust) and small (smoke) particles. The main combination filter is surrounded by a washable spandex-like prefilter that catches large particles, like human hair and pet fur. The model can clean rooms up to 540 square feet. But keep in mind that you’ll spend a bit to run and maintain it—about $199 per year for the electricity and replacement filters, by our estimates.

The energy-efficient Airmega 300 was under $300 at Amazon during Prime Day, so this isn’t the best price you can get, but it’s still a significant savings if you need something now. This model narrowly missed the cutoff for a CR recommendation. It’s impressive at removing dust, smoke, and pollen from the air when run at its highest speed, but it’s not very effective at low speed. The model does have its benefits, though. It can handle a large room. It’s not too noisy, even at higher speeds. The controls are a cinch to operate, and the unit, as a whole, is easy to carry and clean. An indicator light tells you when it’s time to change the main filter—a task that’s also simple to do. And, finally, Coway owners are highly satisfied and consider the brand very reliable, according to our survey data.

If you don’t mind some noise, this portable air purifier from GermGuardian may be a solid option, especially with Amazon’s low price, which is the best we’ve seen. CR’s testers find that it’s really good at removing dust, pollen, and smoke particles from the air when running at high speed. But the unit is pricey to maintain because the replacement filters are relatively expensive. The model features a convenient carrying handle, easy-to-use controls, and a programmable timer.

The Levoit PlasmaPro 600S is only about $20 more than we saw last month. It’s a solid performer all around, clearing the air of dust, pollen, and smoke at both higher and lower settings. It’s noisy at high speed, but relatively quiet otherwise. That makes it an ideal choice for an office or bedroom. And you don’t have to worry about keeping track of filter changes: An indicator light alerts you when it’s time for that. This machine also has a dust sensor and a programmable timer.

    Mattress Toppers

ViscoSoft’s gel-infused memory foam topper is reasonably plush but still has a medium- to medium-firm feel. And, while a gel-infused design often equates to a cooler feeling, this topper scores on the warmer side for heat retention. Noteworthy features include corner straps to help keep it in place and a removable machine-washable rayon cover. The topper can also be flipped and rotated, though it weighs 27 pounds so you might need a helper.

A solid value pick, this 3-inch topper from BedStory offers a luxe feel, thanks in part to its removable quilted cover. Lab tests found that its two-layer gel-infused-foam design registers warmer, and an evaluator said that it offers a resilient surface with a medium- to medium-soft feel. Highlights include an inner encasement as well as a machine-washable cover that zips down halfway. A nonslip design on the bottom of the cover gives it an extra bit of stabilization, as do its corner straps. BedStory offers a 10-year warranty on all mattresses and toppers.

    Sleep Masks

    Mzoo Sleep Mask

The Mzoo typically costs $23, so you’re saving only a few bucks, but either way this mask is affordable, well designed, and effective at blocking light for most face shapes and head sizes. CR’s team of evaluators had a wide range of preferences and needs, and yet most agreed that the Mzoo mask was a great option.

    Slip Silk Sleep Mask

There’s no doubt about it: This popular mask is gorgeous. It’s made with stunning silk fabric, with colors including a lush navy, a graceful ballet pink, and an opulent gold. It has a scrunchy backstrap that stretches rather than adjusts, which allows for a more seamless look (but perhaps an imperfect fit). To that end, some evaluators found that the mask was true to its name and slipped during the night.

    Sunrise Alarm Clocks

JALL Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock

The JALL Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock usually costs about $40, so this is just a small discount. It came out on top in our evaluations from an ease-of-use standpoint. It has two independent alarms (so you can set them for different times depending on your routine), seven alarm tones (including “wind bells” and birds chirping), an FM radio, and a fall-asleep mode that simulates a sunset (though no white-noise option). It was relatively easy to set up and use. According to the manufacturer, it emits a maximum light intensity of 240 lux. Tapping the snooze button will temporarily shut off both the light and the sound. (The advantage: You’re more likely to fall back asleep in the dark. The disadvantage? You’re more likely to fall back asleep in the dark.)

    White Noise Machines

Magicteam Sound Machines White Noise Machine

This small plug-and-play sound machine from Magicteam is sized just right—like a deck of cards if cards were square. And it’s back down to the best price we’ve seen. It delivers good sound quality and variety, packing in 20 sounds, including nature sounds and even a freight train. The controls, just five buttons, are intuitive to use, although one evaluator said they were quite small and a bit difficult to see in low light. And it has a timer in case you don’t want it playing all night.

    Bath Towels

    Brooklinen Super Plush Bath Towels

Want to cuddle up in your bath towel? Get the Brooklinen Super-Plush (sold in a pair), available at 15 percent for first-time shoppers. These guys are huge. At 53 inches long and 28 inches wide, the Brooklinen towel is what you want to wrap yourself in when the temps are below freezing and the thought of stepping out of a steaming warm shower onto an ice-cold floor chills your heart. These towels were the most absorbent in our evaluation, but they also took the longest to dry.
