Elmira District Secondary School is in Elmira, Ontario and serves students from Elmira and surrounding countryside. The school has been open since 1939 and has a strong tradition of academic excellence, community contributions, and athletic success.

Its graduates include Malcolm Gladwell. Students at EDSS raised over $94,000 in a Relay for Life Cancer event - the best for any high school in Canada, and athletes from EDSS are commonly recruited by top schools in Canada and the US.

The flag is a way to take our emblem outside the school to be displayed wherever EDSS Lancers represent the school with pride and honour.

Graphic Description

The Lancer, official flag of Elmira District Secondary School (EDSS), was first flown at the annual Commencement Exercises on November 7, 2008. It continues to be flown wherever and whenever Lancers represent Elmira District Secondary School with honour.

The Lancer bears the traditional emblem of EDSS, the lancer and charger. It is two units in length by one in width (Field - 184 X 92 cm, Car - 36 X 18 cm, Desk, 18 X 9 cm) and is based on a white field with dark green (Pantone 360 C) and medium gray (Pantone 10 U) as its only colours.

The Lancer's outer edge is defined by a dark green line inset from the edge of the flag by its own width and by gray lines equal to the green line in width inset from the green line by the width of the green line. The green line is contiguous around the perimeter of the flag while the gray lines form two segments on either end of the flag with ends penetrating the Canadian Pale thus implied at forty-five degrees. The emblem is centred on the flag and dominates the Canadian Pale.

Said emblem is comprised of a lancer, bearing lance at rest, astride a white charger salient emerging from a dark green shield indicating that the bearer(s) of the flag will defend the values of EDSS. Emerging from a dark green shield into the white field, the lancer and charger demonstrate the EDSS motto, Ab Obscuritate, Ad Lucem (Out of the darkness [of ignorance], into the light [of knowledge]). At the same time, the lancer and charger indicate teamwork by looking dexter (toward the hoist) and gauche (toward the fly), respectively, as they emerge from the shield.

The Lancer should be flown as second flag when either national or provincial flag is present or as third flag when both the national and provincial flags are present.
