Restored United States of America

This is a flag seen briefly in the movie. This flag was also used on the cover of the re-released paperback edition of the book released after the movie was advertised. The flag represents the "Restored United States of America" and the beginning of the return of order in Oregon in a post World War III/germ warfare holocaust scenario.
Michael Smuda, 17 June 1999

An image of the flag can be seen on the film poster here. The font in the inscription is thick and nonseriffed, and a lighter shade of red than the stripes. A careful look at the positions of the rows of stars and of the inscription suggests that the proportions should be something less than 1:2 — it comes out close to 3:5.

Incidently, the "Restored United States" does not actually exist, it is a fraud cooked up by the protagonist to rally the survivors.

Army of Nathan Holn

Another flag from the movie "The Postman:" The Army of Nathan Holn, a gang of thugs organized along paramilitary lines and the movie's villains. The flag appears briefly flying from their fortress. The "8" is the symbol of the group and refers to the 8 Rules of Nathan Holn, published in his prewar survivalism manual.
