Universities

The Croatian universities use their symbols, which are mostly seal-shaped, often circular, and, although the universities themselves call them "coats of arms", have no heraldic character and cannot be considered heraldic coats of arms. Most of the symbols contain inscriptions in Croatian and/or Latin. In the academic tradition, each university has also an official Latin name.
Generally, no colour is prescribed for them, except for their use on flags. The university flags are mostly monocoloured, often matching the colour of the town's flag. As a rule the symbols are prescribed in the Statutes of each university.

Polytechnics

Polytechnics (veleučilište) and colleges of applied sciences (visoke škole) are institutions that organise and implement professional studies. Polytechnics implement at least three different professional study programmes in at least three fields, while colleges of applied sciences provide specialised professional study programmes in fewer fields.
Important note: Prospective students should be aware that polytechnics may instead use the term "University of Applied Sciences" as the title of their institution. Similarly, certain colleges of applied sciences may instead use the term "University College" or "School" as the title of their institution. This does not indicate an affiliation with any university.
