Description of the flag

Uinta County (19,742 inhabitants in 2002; 54,080 ha) forms the southwest corner of Wyoming. Organized in 1869 by the first Territorial Legislature of Wyoming and named for a native tribe that once inhabited the region, the county has its seat at Evanston.

I contacted the Mayor of Evanston, Wyoming about the Uinta County flag. He responded:

I was given the task of developing a county flag several years ago. We took some interesting measures to determine what would be appropriate and at the same time historically accurate for a flag. Those plans were rejected by the commission and the flag that now waves in front of the courthouse is the authorized county flag. The flag you describe similar to the Wyoming Flag with the locomotive replacing the buffalo never came to fruition. I hope this helps. Thank you!

Former proposed flag

In the "Uinta County Herald", 20 March 2009, Erin Buller reports the proposal of county flag, presented by County Planner Kent Williams to the County Commissioners, as follows:
"[...]
County Planner Kent Williams said he was commissioned last year to create a flag for the county. He said he solicited input from all Uinta County elementary and middle schools as well as regular citizens to get ideas for what a county flag should look like. Williams said he received back more than 75 drawings, sketches and ideas for the flag. "We've done our best to incorporate the bulk of those suggestions," Williams said. "Most of the suggestions we received we've incorporated in one way or another, with the colors, the train symbol and the county emblem."

The finished product is the exact opposite in color scheme from the Wyoming state flag with blue on the outside, red on the inside and white separating the two. A train locomotive replaces the Wyoming Buffalo symbol and the Uinta County Seal replaces the Wyoming seal. "Most of the suggestions included something about the railroad or trains," Williams said. "It was a recurring theme." Williams said the County Commissioners have to approve the flag design and then he can have it made. [...]"
