Description of the flag

AMVETS, or American Veterans, is a veterans service organization, political action group, and charitable cause that was founded in 1944 in Kansas City, Missouri. The organization was originally founded by and for American veterans returning from service in the Second World War, helping them deal with benefit claims, disabilities, continuing education, and reintegrating into society. In 1947, Public Law 216 made AMVETS the first veterans service organization chartered by Congress, but still focusing on World War II veterans only. The charter has since been amended by Congress by allow membership to veterans of successive wars. Membership today is open to American service members on active duty or veterans that served honorably anytime from WWII to the present, and including the National Guard and Reserves. The organization is volunteer-led and sponsors many community-focused service programs to help veterans. Additionally, the organization acts as a Congressional lobby for veterans' rights legislation. I was able to find several photographs of the AMVETS flag online, including at www.amvetsnsf.org. The AMVETS flag features the organization's logo centered on a white field. The flag can have a gold fringe when used in a ceremonial function.
