Brits urged to practice 'sobergasm' as most of nation doing one thing wrong in bedroom

Festive season is prime time for 'getting it on', but there is one thing promising to ruin the fun for Brits in the bedroom. Though, it looks like there's something that could save the day

Brits are being urged to practice a new method in the bedroom as apparently most of us are doing the same one thing wrong - yes, really.

The festive season is a time of getting close to a loved one - or some randomer you've hit things off with in the bar. No matter your circumstances, there's something about Christmas time that gets people in the mood. But, there's also something that will quickly extinguish that flame in the bedroom.

And what is that? Booze. Yes, the very thing that gave you the confidence to put on that sexy Santa outfit for your partner or the courage to approach that hotty from across the bar will most likely end up on the naughty list once you get down to the deed.

It's known that alcohol can make it more difficult to achieve reaching climax because the substance, which is a depressant, slows down the central nervous system. This means it interferes with the signals sent to and from your brain and rest of your body - including your prized goods.

So what can you do? Well, sexual wellness brand Lovehoney and former Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews' non-alcoholic drink brand Clean Co have teamed up to champion the 'sobergasm' - the sober orgasm.

It comes after new Lovehoney research revealed that 64% of people have had sex while intoxicated but just 20% 'always enjoy it'.

The research also highlighted an 'orgasm gap' between those having alcohol-fuelled sex and having sex generally, as being intoxicated decreases your chances of orgasm by 33%.

In the study, only 29% of men and 11% of women say that they 'always orgasm during drunk sex'. That is compared to the 45% of men and 15% of women who 'orgasm every time ordinarily' (representing a gap of 36% and 27% respectively).

And even if reaching climax wasn't the goal, over half of those surveyed shared that sober sex allows them to 'appreciate the moment more'. Also, looking at the generational side of things, Gen Z are the most likely to engage and enjoy sober sex compared to those who are older.

Annabelle Knight, sex and relationship expert at Lovehoney, explained: "Drunk sex certainly isn’t a new thing, but it’s still clearly quite common.

"It’s great to see the younger generation is embracing a more sober-curious lifestyle and engaging in drunk sex less frequently. As the results of the survey suggest, having sex while drunk can inhibit not only your pleasure, but even your ability to orgasm.

"There is a general disconnect between your brain and the rest of the body when you drink, including your sexual organs.

"Practising sober sex means that you can feel more present in the moment and more attuned to your own body’s stimulation but also your partners, leading to an all-round more pleasurable experience.”

While the campaign focuses on practising sober sex, Spencer and his drink brand have concocted the 'sobergasm' in cocktail form that consists of:

  • 25ml fresh lime juice
  • 50ml CleanCo Clean T
  • 1tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 1tbsp Dr Stings hot honey
  • Sea salt, chilli flakes and lime to garnish

Spencer Matthews, founder of CleanCo, commented: "This partnership between Lovehoney and CleanCo has been a pleasure to work on, but also surprisingly eye-opening.

"Alcohol really does effect so much of our lives and relationships, and sex is no exception. It’s been fascinating to see the results of our sober sex study and really delve into the world of sexual wellness, and how it intersects with alcohol.

"Hopefully this partnership encourages people to understand why many people prefer sober sex and to open up this festive season, have real conversations and reflect on their relationship with alcohol in a way that’s light-hearted and pressure free."
