EEP targets to generate 25,000GWh of power in 2024/25 Fiscal Year

Addis Ababa, December 26, 2024 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced that it is targeting to generate more than 25,000GWh of power from various energy sources in the fiscal year 2024/25. This achievement, according to EEP, is attributed to the sufficient water storage in the hydroelectric dams during the recent rainy months.

Ms. Truwork Shiferaw, Head of Planning Office for the Power Generation Operation at EEP, stated that the hydropower dams are required to store sufficient water to generate power at the full capacity of hydroelectric dams.

She mentioned the hydroelectric power plants’ performance in the first quarter of this fiscal year as a benchmark and stated that the amount of water currently held in the reservoirs of hydroelectric power dams is sufficient to meet the target for the current fiscal year.

Ms. Truwork pointed out that in order to properly utilize the amount of water that dams stored, attention will be given to maintenance, water management, and supply of spare parts, while asserting that the water management of the dams in the 2024/25 fiscal year is better compared to the same period last fiscal year.

In that regard, more than 25,000 gigawatt hours of electricity are planned to be generated from various energy sources in the current fiscal year, she underscored.

The Gilgel Gibe I, Fincha, Melka Wakena, Tana Beles, Tekeze, Genale Dawa, Qoqa, and Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) hydropower dams are full, while the Gibe III and Amerti Neshe dams have stored sufficient water to operate at their full capacity during the fiscal year, she added.
